hi

Id love some thoughts on this one please:

i have to create a new site to replace an old one.

the old site has basically three types of pages:
I) service pages (one per product i.e one for black cars )
II) supplementary service pages - ie one for long black cars, another for fast black cars etc - a fair bit of text duplication here which needs sorting
III) service pages that were optimised to include towns in he title h1 etc - very old school
a lot of duplication text here#

when i look at impressions, clicks and positions in google search console over 16 months - they have quite varying rates of performance which some reasonable impression rates and a handful that have top ten position rates

my question is what criteria should i adopt to select which ones get redirect 301s to equivalent pages on new site and / or get deleted?

Thank you

    301 added to index page will effectively cancel your old website.

    Completely removing old site isn't very good idea.
    Lets say you add to your old pages Meta-tags like:
    <meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0;url=http://www.new-ste.tld/page-on-new-site" />
    If there are links to that page(s) you will have good backlink to new site's pages
    and of course you won't lose your old customer, which you would if you'll kill old site.

      just to be on safe side to understand please - does this suggested code only work if my site is on a new domain since my new site will still be on my current domain - its just that the pages i want to redirect wont be needed - but they have some seo value to my mind at least you see. thanks in advance

    thank you for your replies

    Regarding the 301 redirects - should i do this for every page or pick the ones that have performed better for me?

    Is it worth spending time to optimise the old pages before i do the redirect in say 6 months time? I ask since won't be launching new site immediately and i'm not sure if the benefit of any optimisation that i carried out to my existing pages would last after the redirect you see!

    also i've been told that redirected pages are removed from google after a set period anyway? is this true?

        thanks

        i asked since you also said '301 added to index page will effectively cancel your old website' which made me wonder if might be feasible on the other pages. but clearly not

        not a troll - can read - just learning

          cancel your old website - crawlers won't be capable to go around
          kill your old website - if you remove old pages except index page,
          your old users won't be capable to find your new pages.

          Hopefully you'll get the idea while making sure it's up to you what to chose.

    Absolutely, you can use 301 inside of your old to new site's pages.

      hi and thanks i was referring to this code you suggested:
      <meta http-equiv="refresh" content="0;url=http://www.new-ste.tld/page-on-new-site" />

      could this code above be used for any pages that i'd like redirected to new pages within my existing domain please? to be clear there is only one domain you see. i've abandoned plans to buy a new domain and create a new site you see.
