Best way to use anchor text?

Hi Guys

I have been doing research for a few weeks about the best way to use anchor text when linking but havent had a straight answer anywhere and I have searched allot!

There is allot of talk about using more and more lon tail keywords which makes sense but the problem is my niche hasnt got many long tail keywords which actually get searched for.

Heres my hypothetical example:

Say my niche was "sports cars"

And the long tail keywords I was using were things like "buy cheap sports cars", "get sports cars cheap"

Now this is only an example as I am pretty sure that "buy cheap sports cars" does get search volumes but lets say that when doing keyword research there was not enough data to show how many people typed that kind of stuff in.

My question is, is it better to use descriptive anchor text with the main keywords you are wanting to be found for instead of going after a generic term such as "sports cars"?

I have been looking at some of the top seo companies links and a few of them are using anchor text which is near enough a sentence, things like:

"Search engine optmisation professionals providing top results on Google"

Now with LSI becoming something that is the new way to use the keyword box on your site things are becoming more and more descriptive and I am wondering if things are moving towards things actually being described instead of the same one/two word anchor text?

I can understand why this would happen as it will make th search better quality as if your anchor text says something like "cats" it could mean many things to do with cats but if you have anchor text saying something like "information on training your cat" it shows not only the search engine but the user too what they will find on the page being linked.

I am asking what is working for people? How are you using anchor text?

I do find that the world of seo is a strange place where people do not want to give away their secrets but if someone could just give me a nod that I am going in the right direction then I would be most greatful

Thanks

Mark

I always vary it up a ton. Don't use the same one over and over.

Just use some with long tail, some with a short keyword like your example.

The BEST way to do it is to make it look natural. Hints varying it up.

Hi, I don't know if these are gems but here are some pretty basic things people do .....

Have content pages on your website that have titles matching the anchor text. For example, on your website you may have 2 pages:

www.example.com/redsportscars.htm with a Title of Red Sports Cars

www.example.com/blacksportscars.htm with a Title of Black Sports Cars

You then go to the place you want to link from and use anchor text that uses the words "red sports cars" and links to www.example.com/redsportscars.htm

Do the same for black sports cars, etc

    I second variety.

It doesn't really matter if you have a great deal of variety of links.

Just make them look as natural as possible, and link away with your desired anchor text - be it long tailed or short tailed.

  • Google is not using LSI as people write about it.

Google has massive real world data to create alogrithums based on what they believe is "natural".

In my experience if your anchor text is too diverse it works against you.

I use SEO Elite to look at anchor text on other sites... I get ratios of keyword phrases for those sites that are ranking, then I try to use anchor text which falls within those ratios.

But for the most part it's important not to vary your anchor text too much - other people linking to you will do that automatically.

It's also important not to rely on just one source or type of linking... meaning you need a diverse strategy to include all types of sites. If you focus just on bookmarks, or blog comments, etc. You'll be to heavy in one area.

You can confirm this by comparing site sources by reverse engineering top performing sites. I use SEO Elite, it's one of it's best features, but you can do it in a lot of ways.

Also this is my link building plan:

I have a seperate page for every keyword that get over a certain amount of searches per month but as my site is all about one subject nearly every page will mention another within it (I also link everytime a keyword is displayed).

Some pages will be able to take the same anchor text as another, example:

My service page tells about every service we provide, so my services page could take a number of different anchor text links, if someone clicks a link expecting a certain service they will find information on that service and a link towards a page strickly to do with that service, get it?

So my thinking is my whole site will rank well for my niche as my WHOLE site is very targetted, good idea?

In terms of anchor text I have been trying to work out whether it is good to use long tail or short tail, problem is that there arent very many long tail keywords that actually get searches that is why I am asking if I should be doing anchor text like this:

*site about red cars* - (anchor text) = get a red car today

Now I no that there isnt any volume of searches for that keyword but it has my keywords in the text, im confused!

Like I said I have been doing some looking into seo companies and the text they are using and they are using full on sentences with the keywords (sometimes more than one) in the text and they are page one placed, do they know something we dont?

I mean 'red cars' can mean anything, it can mean 'buy red cars', 'hire red cars' or 'information about red cars' even though the main keyword would probably be 'red cars', you see what I mean.

Am I going about everything all wrong?

You are letting detail get in the way of linking. Vary the anchor text. That's enough.

You should always vary your anchor text but you still want to stay true to the keywords that you are targeting.

      I think he meant ...

During the time spent discovering the "ultimate" anchor text usage while backlinking, you could have placed or outsourced a great many valuable links. That said ...

Id love to analyze the data behind the testing that proved ... varied anchor text performs better than un-varied anchor text backlinks links.

If I wanted to rank for the keyword variations - id vary the anchor text.

Variety is important when you're competing for highly desirable terms that require several months of backlinking and a high number of backlinks but your long tail keyword articles that need a few dozen 0PR profile style backlinks just don't need it. Get the boost from using the same keyword every time and move on.

You have to use both horizontal and vertical keywords. If "sport cars" is it we get keywords that have to do with sports cars like speed, part on the car like sport tires, spoilers.. then go in to types of sports cars like vipers, Lamborghini, mustang etc. You can get more keywords than you think

I use the SEObook keyword tool, enter a few main phrases, like "cat" and then download the csv file of variations. I then use most of those as anchor text over time.
