~~Blog and Forum Commenting - How to Avoid Getting Your Comment Deleted?

I've been doing a fair amount of blog and forum commenting to create high PR backlinks to my site.

I've found that using my target keyword as the anchor text for my link is a surefire way to get my comment deleted by a moderator.

I'm thinking of switching my strategy to just using my name as the "user name" anchor text (in other words, when the user name is the link to the commenter's URL, I'll use "Julia" and it will link to my site, rather than using my "keyword" as the user name).

Will this have value for my site in the SERPs even if I'm not using my target keyword as the anchor text?

I think that you need to do more than post backlinks from forums and blogs in order to rank high in your niche

Yes, I have been. I use Angela's Backlinks and I'm contacting authority sites in my niche looking for links back to my site. Using web 2.0 sites, social bookmarking, pinging, RSS, etc. The works.

But I'd like to know what impact leaving a backlink without targeted anchor text will have.

I feel that a backlink is always going to count in terms of value unless it is coming from a bad neighborhood.
Using your name will still pass PR juice which has value in SEO and counts toward achieving authority status for your site.
One very important thing I've noticed is that high PR sites almost always have their posts ranking for various long tails when they publish them because they are getting linked to immediately from their high pr homepage.

Looking at it in terms of non-seo value...commenting on blogs in your related niche will bring visitors to your blog as well as help build relatinships with related bloggers. A blog comment is the first step at networking with a blogger in your niche.

I think you should ALWAYS use some keyword that you target as your name. And yes a 10% of blog comments is moderated and deleted, so what ?

Just keep on posting and commenting. Also remember to PING your comment page or post. That will index the page of comment or post faster.

Also you may want to link a bit those comments and post from other websites, to give them more power. No risk in that and works great.

Or you could skim the blog post itself and post a relevant question, along with whatever links you want. Instead of saying "hey, great post!" you could take a sentence or something and question them on that. Blog owners like it when people care enough to ask questions and won't mind any links you throw in.

The current thinking seems to be that the anchor text accounts for around 20% of the ranking factors (source: seomoz), so leaving it out will significantly decrease the power of the link, but not negate it.
