Hi!

I've been testing this time after time and want to share with you some solutions I found to a common problem. Hopefully I can help some people and maybe we can all help each other.

Did you ever have a page that for some reason constantly fluctuates on a daily/weekly basis?

One day it's in position #2 after a few days it drops to #8. You decide not to touch it and NOT to build backlinks then it goes back to #5 lost again on the 3rd page or even de-indexed....goes bad to the 5th page...You get the idea....

Yes, Google is a dynamic search engine and does change it SERPS regularly but not every day, especially not the main page. How would they be able to test and change the algorithm accordingly (trust me they do test) First page results are usually hammered in until the next update. So why does your page always move around?

Here's a scenario:

You have a well optimized page
  • -The keyword in the title tag
  • -The Keyword in the Description
  • -The Keyword In the URL
  • -OK Competition (Lets say Under 50,000 competing results with quotes)
  • -The Keyword in The H1
  • -1% - 4% Keyword density and LSI words
  • -Decent backinks
  • -Domain age - Lets not focus on this now...Here's proof -

And I've outranked 6 and 7 year old domains with a new website for a good keyword in the Credit and Debt niche. It depends more on the competition, the quality of site (and things to do with google's index - which I won't go into now) rather than the age... those who've heard the Interview that Stephan Spencer did with Matt Cuts (here's the interview - Interview with Google's Matt Cutts at Pubcon )will know more about whether the Domain age is Really that important or not...

-Ohh and very important - The site updates regularly..

I think you get the picture....

But it still fluctuates....hmmmm

Here are a few simple things you can do...

On Page:

Look at your page and try to find content that is constantly changing or updating. For example: unrelated comments, Latest posts...(Keep in mind that if your homepage is ranking then that is not the case - I am referring only to inner pages). I would remove any comments and even close them, and remove links such as recent posts.

How many words are there in the article?

Aim for 600 words...add photos...Google loves content! And so will your visitors - your goal should be to keep people on your optimized page as long as possible and Google will reward you for that.

If all that is ok then ....

Head over to the Google keyword tool and type in your key word. Make sure your results are sorted by relevance. Select the FIRST 3 results and use them as Titles...you'll need to make 3 posts, nothing fancy, although recommended...with those LSI words as titles. Be sure to use your primary key word you are optimizing for within the first 50 words and also add an additional link to your optimized page with the keyword as the anchor text.

And enter in the page you are trying to rank for....You should see a nice outline and logical...I always use H2's and H3's, H1 goes without saying, just like a Word Document.
You want to make your on page factors as clear as possible and NOT confuse Google...Sometimes we think about tricking the engines when in fact all they want from us is to teach them!

Off Page:

Get a few more links to your site with the exact keyword you are targeting....Here's the truth if you're moving up and down the first page and on to the 2nd page then back again...then the links that are pointing to your website are good, if they weren't, you wouldn't be reaching that far up, would you?

Backlinks are always great just avoid poisoned link farms. Go after your competitors link...follow, nofollow, just go for them....(tip: no follow links do not pass PR but they do help you get indexed....and that's what you need...to get the spider visiting your page...)

Quote from wikipedia...and many other places:
The nofollow attribute value is not meant for blocking access to content, or for preventing content to be indexed by search engines.
With a hand on my heart...

Angela's and Paul's Backlinks are Great and recommended...please note that I am not affiliated with them in any way.

Do that and don't touch your page....

Move on....What you want is to get a static result...You want to see your page in a specific position preferably in the top 5 and then build more links.
Some people work mainly on building backlinks and think that if they have thousands of them they will rank...well sure that will work....and you should build backlinks, but it is not the main thing, it's lot easier to fix your pages and make them static...

Google's index is just like a book... a table of contents metaphorically speaking....in a way it says:

#1 - This is what you are looking for
#2 - This is also interesting...
#3 - You might like this too
.
.
#936 - Forget about it :-)

Cheers!
