Using google webmaster to track keywords

I've noticed a lot of people using webmaster to monitor how their keywords are ranking. When I look at how mine are doing and see for instance keyword 1 has had 40 searches with a ranking of #4, I then click on it and webmaster shows me the SERPS for that keyword. But it is always nowhere to be seen. I always try looking at the US results but still the same.
Does anyone else find this. Is webmaster useless for this task?

I've been finding their data to be more up to date lately and I definitely have been watching it.

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.

I use Google Anaylitics to track my KWs and it seems like it's right on target. I prefer to use that than Google's Webmaster.

Well, at webmster tools it give you the ranking information not exactly of the same time but and that is why it varries. You can go for Google analytics that will give you more accurate information.

Yes me too. The results seem to be useless. I use Google webmaster tools just to make sure Google indexed my site as soon as possible only. And check for the broken links.
