Url Optimization Question

A associate of mine brought up a good question that i didn't have an answer for, so I thought I would run it by you warriors:

The website she wants to optimize is a extension of a larger website(i.e. www.examplesite.com/herextension)

Can that url be optimized as efficiantly as the main url? I'm intersted in helping her with HER url, not the main url.

Thanks Warriors!

yes, but it is more of a challenge and here is why. When you ask someone for links, the natural inclination is to link to the top level of the domain. It is more challenging (but can be done) to get someone to link to an interior page. Good luck, Mr. Marketer.

Wait a sec Phil - what if she doesn't want to ask anyone to link to her site? Maybe she wants to just backlink from a web 2.0 prop or something like that.

Actually, if you want to optimize part of your URL like that - it can't hurt, it will help. However, I've seen sites all the time that have the main URL for a popular KW - and they are mostly ranking in the top 5.

Yes, that's pretty much exactly what I was thinking. Backlinking, web 2.0, articles, SB & RSS... Just wanted to make sure it was indeed worth the effort. The site's that I've optimized, have all been main domain names so I wanted to make sure.

Right, she's fairly optimized onpage for her keyword, I don't think it's over used but it shouldn't have any problem indexing.
