I have heard that it is best to backlink to your website (because the is your home), but I have seen articles from ezine go #1 on google with only a couple of backlinks. Can your keyword phrase get to #1 faster backlinking an article over a website?

The benefit an article site has is that it is an established website so new content (your article) is going to benefit from that sites authority.

The problem with using an article site is that you don't own the site or any additional content added to the page your article is on. If that site goes down or removes your article you're out of luck. You'll also have to accept that the article site is going to add additional ads to your page that compete with your own sales links.

The benefit of using your own website is that you own that site and all of it's content. If you put in the same amount of effort and backlinks into your own site that you would an article you're site will grow, gain authority and should rank just as well when everything is said and done. It just takes more groundwork and time to get your site up to speed.

There is no reason why you couldn't use something like wordpress and write every article as a new page and backlink each of those pages the same as you would an article on an article site. You'd essentially be creating your own personal article site and all of the work you put into it is benefiting your site. There are really hundreds of different directions you can go with this sort of thing, just requires some out-of-the-box creativity.

Hope that might clear things up some.
