I usually try to focus on 2-3 main keywords. Usually you will rank for more long-tail keywords naturally. For example, lets say your trying to rank for red flowers. You may eventually rank for tiny red flowers, etc... Go for your easier keywords on interior pages and then push the harder main keywords on your main index page. It usually works out well for me. Read Terry Kyle's thread. You will find that you can push red flowers on an interior page and get the main page to rank as well. The key is to start at it. You will learn as you go. Just don't try to rank for every keyword on just one page.

      Hi riojisan,

It doesn't matter how many keywords you have if you are not ranking on page 1 of the SERP. I wouldn't dilute my efforts tying to go for all 200 keywords at once. Instead concentrate all of your efforts on 1 or 2 keywords until you get those to page 1. Then move on to the next keyword and repeat the same concentrated effort. Rinse and repeat as often as necessary.

If I get what you are asking... you are adding backlinks to something like a profile page and you want to know how many links you can put on a page / how many anchor text keywords you should have per backlink page.

First off... you can only have one anchor text - per link - per page. You can't have the same link on a page with 100 different anchor texts.... just doesn't work that way and you'll only get credit for one.

    this is bad...

webpage.com - anchor text "red widget"
webpage.com - anchor text "blue widget"
webpage.com - anchor text "green widget"

    this is good...

webpage.com/redwidget - anchor text "red widget"
webpage.com/bluewidget - anchor text "blue widget"
webpage.com/greenwidget - anchor text "green widget"

back to the question of how many links per page, well, that depends on how spammy you want to be. I like to stick to around 4 but I've gone as high as 8 depending on the site platform and what works / what I can get away with.

Some guys go for the gold and have so many links the page looks like a link farm.

    I'm all about that bass.

Yes, targeting too many keywords all at once will dilute your efforts. You can and perhaps should pursue all those keywords, just not all simultaneously.

Choose your two most promising keywords and put all of your efforts into promoting those keywords until you reach a page one listing. Then move to the next two, and so on. This will ensure that your are receiving the maximum benefit from your marketing efforts.

Besides, if you try to promote 200 keywords all at once on a single site you are likely to see all your efforts erased due to such blatant spamming. That would be the least efficient method.

i would go for two, if you are using anchor text try to write more than just your links, write a report or whatever, try to make that page seem relevant to your site.
