would you pay $299 for a dir.yahoo.com backlink?

hey

I've read in the book "Getting on top of google" where he recommend paying $299 for a backlink on dir.yahoo.com.

Have any of you done this? Was it helpful?

In the book he writes that if you don't submit a link in that link diectory you are not serious about IM

But I'm not that easily convinced. In his book I've also read that the effect of a pagerank is diveded by all the outgoing links. So I've dir.yahoo.com got 3000 outgoing links (it's a link directory after all) then it's effective PR8 is PR8/3000 - or so I understand it in my humble mind...

what's your thought/suggestions about this? would you do it? If you have already done it, did it help you?

Well, If I had to spend $299, I'd rather spend it on other marketing methods. While directory is surely good quality, 1 backlink never does any magic! Why not try out services that submit to other directories for low rates?

      You mean link linkjuicer.com?

I'm already using that on another niche site. But this is a new niche site I created yesterday, the niche is based on keyword research.

I think that with linkjucier I would have to submit thousands of links if it should have an effect like a backlink from a PR8 site....

But I see what you mean, there are other ways of spending that amount of money. I haven't decided yet...

The backlink you get from the Yahoo Directory is helpful (we tend to recommend it for our company clients, not affiliates), but the truth is you can get more value out of that same $300 by using a good link building service, social profiles, dozens of written articles, etc. BTW, you'll know once your Yahoo Directory is active since you start to get sales calls from people offering new services

I have over 150 sites listed this way. I can't tell you how many stories revolve around getting ranked after purchasing a Yahoo directory listing.

My guess is that Google likes them because of their strict quality guidelines and the fact that they are one of the few human edited directories left that can be considered reliable.

Would I pay for it? Yes, and I have. But is it worth it? Yes and no.

It's worth it for sites that make an excellent profit by selling their own product. It's good for ecommerce stores, info product sites that I own, etc. It's not really all that good for small article sites, AdSense sites, affiliate sites, etc.

I have tried paying the fee for both types of sites, and it's really only made a difference on the sites that actually sell their own product(s) in my experience.

I know for example Angela backlinks offer 30 backlinks for $5 each month, that package contain high value backlinks (PR 5 - 10). Creating a backlink on those sites, gives a page rank of 0 or 1 (the PR of the page the backlink is placed on). I've got a .edu backlink and the page my backlink is at has PR1, despite the domain is PR8

Compared this to dir.yahoo.com. main domain is PR8, The page my backlink most likely to appear on at dir.yahoo.com has PR5...

Also checked using SEOSPY that backlinks from this dir.yahoo.com site has much bigger link value than from .edu domain. Maybe because the .edu backlink is placed on PR1 page and dir.yahoo.com backlink is placed in a PR5 page.

Considering signing up for this service

As far as I know, it is not a one-time fee, and there is no guarantee.
You will be billed $299 a year.

But I question whether people use the directory?

10 years ago when they had a free service, I got a page in
there. I don't know if it's still there or not.

But I do know that I get listed in yahoo's results, so why should I
      sent them $299?

That's not an unreasonable amount to pay for a yearly link, however.
I just sold a year link on one of my sites for $550. But that link is probably
worth more on my site than in yahoo's directory, traffic wise.

Like a few others have said, it depends on the website. Some of my clients and I play in some very very competitive niches. The top guys have a ton of domain age, thousands of quality links, and great content. You NEED all the help you can get in those kinds of battle grounds, and a Yahoo link is a lot of help.

For my small mini niche sites, I can hit #1 on Google within a month because there's very little competition to speak of. And the competition isn't well built so it's easy to knock out the guys at the top.

So it is worth it but don't blow money on it unless it's a real quality business you plan on making a lot of money with.

Hmm, i t looks like I cannot make up my mind on this on. Sometimes i want to submit, sometimes think it's not worth it

I have a site which haves about 30.000.000 competing pages for it's main keyword (1.500.000 search per month). keyword without quotes. Created the site before I started to read about keyword research. Now that site has SERP #46, I which I could get the SERP below #15... that's what I'm aiming at

The site is a non-commercial site.

I'm kind of desperate, the goal is to get the site more up on the rankings and receive more traffic. Now it gets about 15 visitors each day (human vistors except myself). I want it be atleast 1500 visitors each month, as then I will implement CPA - and hopefully the site will generate some money for me... It has potential only of it moves up on the rankings.

This is on a highly competitive niche with around 1500000 search per month. Now I got around 92 backlinks (Angela + backlink booster) and is at SERP #49 (moved 5 places down since yesterday).

My goal is to atleast get my site on page 2 in google. Think even if I'm at that place I might makes some money on CPA. I get about 20 visitors per day from being on page 5, so I reckon page 2 will give a nice increase in traffic.

Haven't decided yet, but I see the sites in top 3 for this keyword is included in the dir.yahoo.com directory

I use it for my most important sites, every time I've used it I've had a significant boost in SERPS. Don't try comparing it just based on PR from other sites that's completely misleading. Google seems to trust the Yahoo directory a lot, remember links are contextual, from your niche and means yours is a serious site.

Whether it's worth it - obviously depends on the site, your goals, how much money it's likely to generate. In most competitive serious niches you'll probably find the top sites all have a Yahoo Directory listing, it's expensive but way more reliable than results than hundreds of other high Pr links.

I've just paid a similar amount from a really good service for some high PR links from blogs (actual page PR) - I had nowhere near the SERPS boost that I get from a Yahoo listing.

Anyway just my experience, if I'm serious about a site I'd always get it listed, a micro niche or autoblogger I wouldn't actually bother.

I think the answer to your question somewhat depends on how competitive your niche is....when one of my sites had very little competition the Yahoo directory did wonders.

I've wanted to experiment with a $299 (annually) Yahoo Directory link for quite a while and when Tom Goodwin and I recently opened BacklinksForum.com (just over a month ago), we bit the bullet and applied.

The process took about 7 days from application to the link being live (they keep your $299 if they reject you, by the way) and the result?

For the term 'backlinks' which has some pretty strong competitors there including backlink automation systems, the forum went to Page 2 within a day or two of the live Yahoo link. the site was brand new and just 2 weeks old at the time. Google may also favour forums (vb4 in our case) more too as we had tons of pages indexed by that time as well.

We haven't improved on that position yet and the Yahoo Directory doesn't replace a core linkbuilding strategy (unfortunately) but it certainly gave us a LOT of add-on impact (and Trust) quickly in this particular case.

In future, I'll certainly be looking at using the Yahoo Directory for other sites of mine on Page 1 to help bump them to #1 IF I am pretty confident that the site/s will be approved (apparently they hate affiliate link-heavy sites).

I recommend running a 'clean' info-only approach on a site during application and then reverting to your normal Sales Page a week or two after being added (though they may check a cached version of your site, of course).

I have also heard of other YD users NOT renewing their annual subscription and the link remaining intact.

I paid the money for one of my domains. The problem is that they have two kinds of listings.

      They have the real listing:
      General/conditions/acne

      And the BS Shopping listing
      shopping/goods/conditions/acne

The BS shopping listing doesn't have the same pagerank as the regular listing so you don't get the full benefit of a True Yahoo listing.

BOTW sucks. They have been rejecting lot of sites since their Editor "feels" that the "Site lacks substantive unique content", while the same site gets listed in Yahoo directory.

I have recently submitted a blog to their blog directory with all unique content and got rejected saying, my Site lacks substantive unique content. I guess the editor didnot look past the home page of the blog.

    Hi guys

I do have a few problems with yahoo directory, one thing I would like to say is you dont need it, but it also at the same CAN help.

Yahoo directory staff are probably the most unhelpful you can find, I had to ask them to move my link, from a rediculous section, they moved it but wouldnt edit the description (just flatly refused) very rude !

The problem is you could well end up on a page thats pretty pants, there were 3 pages on the section i ended up at, and i was on the 2nd page, and I wasnt v happy with that.

So really its luck of the draw and dont expect any help from their support if you dont end up where you wanted because you wont get it, btw as someone said above if they refuse ur link they keep your money, which is rediculous !

I recently lost my listing on yahoo as obviously i didnt renew it, and to be honest I didnt notice that much difference

While there may be something to be said as to the effectiveness of a large quantity of backlinks, I think it is far more important (and beneficial) to look at the quality of your backlinks. Yahoo's directory is not only a quality directory to be listed in, but also provides a quality backlink so the money is well worth it IMO.

Yahoo directory is valuable. It is valued by Google because even though you pay for your submission yahoo directory will still evaluate your site if it is reasonable for accepting it will not accept your link and that is what Google wants.

Yeah, you can already submitted your website to lot of directories out there in that amount but the question is. Are they valuable? Some directories will automatically accept your link when you have paid for it but that is nothing to Google. They don't give value on that kind of submission.

But Yahoo does get a lot of traffic. And many posters here feel it is worth it to them. Maybe after hanging out here on the Warrior Forum for awhile I will be doing so well I will have this kind of "extra" money. :-) Then I might try it.

That is true. You are not paying for the listing per se. You are paying for a human to review your site to see if it is worthy of being listed in their directory. So bottom line is if you don't have a site you are proud of and are not certain it is of high quality then it may not be advantageous to pay for the review.

I got a site listed in Yahoo & DMOZ and ranked #1 for the keyword I was after (not long tail, but fairly competitive) in a week.

It has stayed there since then.

If you read the google support forums for AdWords sometimes people from Google end up answering questions around SEO.

The general answer is that they will continue to use human reviewed directories like Yahoo & DMOZ until their testing shows it hurts their results.

So there you go - quality directories like DMOZ & Yahoo are being factored into the SERP rankings.
