Yep, Thesis Theme is the ***! Making a new site now with it.

Anyone care to share some SEO tips, site structure etc.? How do you usually "design" your WP pages? What setting are you using for permalinks?

eg %postname or %category%/%postname% ?

My main goal with that project is to rank for ONE specific keyword.

I already have a static site which is ranking pretty "good" for this keyword, but i wanted to make another site, this time a WP blog to take fully advantage of whatever SEO i can..and now i finally have time to play around with the thesis theme.

My idea is now to use one blog entry sticky on the main page, the page containing an article/review optimized for the keyword.

I also want to put related LSI keywords article on the blog and occasionally update the blog with articles.

I know that the keyword can rank very well and with that site i want to surpass my other site (this time i have the KW in my domain name).

So..if you have any wordpress SEO tips especially with the thesis theme..let us know!

G.

Ok, example:

Let's just assume the keyword is "Acne Treatment" and let's assume the site is
"www. AcneTreatmentHelp .com"

Now i want categories and articles,

aka www. AcneTreatmentHelp.com/CATEGORYNAME/ArticleName/ to link to an article.

Eg if i'd to name the category "Treating Acne" and an article name would be "One good Acne Treatment" i would get a pretty bad URL like

www. AcneTreatmentHelp.com/treating-acne/One-Good-Acne-treatment/

with way too much occurences of the keyword...what would you do?

Use tags, grab the SEO all in one pack and use that in every post, make sure your post title and content is highly relevant to your keyword, and use heading 1 as well.

Thew theme is irrelevant for SEO, its how you use those wordpress options that counts.

Oh and add a ton of ping services into the setting page, not just pingomatic.

If it's a natural way to organise the content of your site, the fact that the keyword acne appears three times in the address won't be a problem. As long it's natural looking, good for humans and doesn't look too keyword stuffed.

In regard to permalinks (just worked with that on a new blog last night) the first thing I do is remove the site title tag. No reason to have it if its not a keyword rich site name and it only takes up space I could use to better target the pages/posts

Yes!! And a good theme should have the site title maybe in H2, H3 even. You know that MANY themes use H1 solely for the site-title..which is a big, big SEO "no-no", i don't know how many themes i already had to hand edit in that regard...

Dont use ALL IN ONE SEO pack with thesis as the 2 conflict, stick with thesis controls as they are all you need.

Also Matt Cutts (head of google) says that the prefered way to have your permalinks of posts is /%postname%/ , straight from the horses mouth.

Also you say about a 'sticky' for your home page, I have thesis or all my sites and I use a static 'home' page with other pages and an 'articles' page which is my blog page, I think this will work for you.

Also your right about thesis, most of the SEO is done for you and anything that isnt is very easy to do. I changed ALL my sites to thesis and I noticed a big difference on sites that had no link building done to them only thesis added.

Many top SEO professionals are backing thesis and Matt Cutts runs his blog on it, its made the world of SEO more open and doable by the average Joe.

From what I understand Thesis seperates the design bit of the site from the stuff like the content, title, keywords and such as the bot doesnt neeed to read all the design stuff it just needs to no what your site is about. This makes building a website easier as it doesnt have all the other stuff in the way and if there is anything wrong with the code of the design of the site it will not affect rankings, water tight code!

Please if I have gotten anything wrong do correct me but I would just like to say Thesis has changed ALLOT of stuff or me!

P.S when you get thesis you will be given a login for their forum where you can find many great designers willing to build websites for anything from $50-$200 which is very reasonable and they make some AMAZING websites!

    Hello Marky,

i ran into the problem that with all static pages or sticky blog posts Thesis uses the Blog tagline (!!) in H1 tag instead of the title. I was googling this issue and this indeed the case, but my logic eluded me why they did it like that. As soon as i put something sticky it messes up my whole concept of H1 and H2 tags.

Furthermore...i am getting so many W3 validation errors, its not even funny. Another known problem. I even checked some of the showcase sites for thesis, and most of them also have LOTS of W3 validation errors.

I could reduce them a little by using FCKeditor instead of tinymce editor...because i noticed TinyMCE "creates" a lot of odd tags which wont validate XHTML strict and FCKeditor less so. Code still not perfect (by var), but better.

The other question, on my front page i have the static page (the main sales page), i have my recent posts, as well as a tag cloud and list of categories. (Whereas i probably will have very few categories since the site is very tightly around one subject)

Is it a good idea to have the tag cloud AND the categories on the front page?

Should i always display a couple of excerpts of new blog postings on the front page..or is the simple "recent post" widget enough?

    Hi George

I came across the H1 prolem when I changed to static home page ut after some discussion on the support forum and with other people in the world of SEO I have een led to believe that Google will take all the nessarsary info from your title tag and any other h2 tags on page making it not so much of a problem.

As I said I use Thesis for ALL my sites, ALL my sites have keyword rich domains and I rank very well without using H1 on my home page.

Now it may be the fact that if I changed it somehow so I had an H1 on the home page I would rank even better but so far I have not come across any problems and have also found other sites not using H1 on the home page or ANY other pages and they rank very well too. check out www limobroker co uk , they do not use H1 on ANY page and they are 1st for many difficult keywords in their niche.

Try it out and see if things go well or not my site is doing very well without H1 on the home page

      Marky & George,

I am thinking of buying Thesis but was slightly concerned about this H1 "bug" which seems to occur when you make the homepage static.

Is this something the developers have commented on or plan to fix?

Have either of you looked at the Headway Theme/System for wordpress. I think it is a direct competitor to Thesis. I may also look into getting that one too.

      Cheers,
      Sam

Its not a bug, its intended, however reasoning given 100% eludes me.

Nope, never heard of Headway, but you might want to check out atahualpa too. Extremely configurable.

I'd lose the category or I'd organize like I do with my static sites. In your example above, change the category to treatment. One word categories help organize a site better because as soon as you start using two or three word categories, you end up having a gazillion categories.

There are a lot of blog based sites out there that have way to many categories and thus the categories are too narrow and thus posts fit into more than one category.

Posts should be narrow, not categories. People can handle lists 7 items or less very well. Sticking to that number or fewer categories lends itself well to a site. You shouldn't need more categories than that to organize your topic. If you do, you are micro managing your categories.
