Why Pinging Your Backlinks May Not be Necessary

Okay I have been reading a lot in this forum about pinging and RSS to your backlinks recently and its true if you do those things you stand a good chance of getting backlinks indexed.

However

I am finding that alot of the times I don't need to do those things. In fact just this week I am finding my links are showing up in google as indexed within 48 hours or less!

So I got to wondering why.

Turns out there MAY be two kinds of backlinks and it shouldn't be a surprise for those who do other SEO. Turns out some site structures are easier to crawl than others and that might have alot to do with how you (or whoever gets backlinks for you) finds those backlinks.

There are two basic ways to find sites to place your backlinks on.

A) study your comptetitors sites and check their backlinks
B) Use search engines themselves to find your backlinks.

The advantage of A is that you find backlinks a little more quickly (although sorting out the backlinks can be tediously slow - just because your competitor has a backlink to his site doesn't mean you can get one from the same site).

The disadvantage is that the links may actually not be that crawlable (if in fact my theory holds water). Also you tend to come up with a lot of sites that are being used by alot of people degrading their PR juice.

The advantage of B is you can find some fairly unique and powerful sites that everyone isn't using (provided you are not just doing the same kind of searches everyone else is doing) and MAYBE because the links are actually in the index already they tend to be more crawlable or for other reasons are crawled more often that other sites.

The disadvantages are that doing unique searches to find quality backlinks can be very time consuming.

SO bottom line is although Pinging and Rss to get your backlinks indexed is all the rage now in some situations it isn't necessary depending on how the backlinks were found.

Some need extra help in being discovered by Google and some don't.

Question is How do links that are not very crawlable impact future upgrades to Pagerank and how the new PR flows to your site much less any changes you might do to those backlinks?

I think throwing some links to your backlinks is better than just pinging them

Yes I've seen this suggestion but I'm not for it. Just seems like a waste of time like a dog chasing its tail. Do you then link to the link that you backlinked your backlink with?

I say get backlinks that are easier for search engines to follow in the first place - at least some of them.

If Google or any other bot cannot find the backlink on a profile through regular crawling then I would argue that the link isn't going to be much chop to begin with. If the bots can't find it then and PR flowing through will be limited also.

Keep your eyes peel on your Google Webmaster account and take note of the profiles that appear quickly. They are usually from similar types of sites (same software package). Focus your link building with these types of sites.

I personally never ping and have never had any issues with my quality link drops showing up.

Well yes and no. That may be a point but some sites just get crawled more often than others. So you could have a site that takes awhile to be crawled but when it does it passes on PR. Your point would hold very well though for future updates.

disagree (but maybe I misunderstood) . I have a wide number of software packaged sites that are indexed quickly. In fact I think most are custom programmed not off the shelf. Google will just crawl some sites more than others based on site structure and on the sites incoming backlinks not on the software package (although some software granted come prepackaged with a good structure which might be your point).

Agree with you on the pinging though. For the last two months I haven't had to ping any of the site I am using.

Sorry, what I meant was use the GWT to find those packages that get your backlinks found quickly, custom or otherwise. So yeah, these sites must have a good structure like you say which let your profile links be readily accessible. Forums with a complete members list that is publicy viewable is one thing that will make your links found quickly.

Right. I'm finding alot of non forums where you can do much more than drop a signature link are getting indexed almost before I can finish a round of backlinking. Saves tom,e when you don't have to worry about pinging all your backlinks just to get them noticed. Worse I hear people talking about having to backlink their backlinks. If you are trying ot do some kind of wheel or pyramid fine but just to get your backlink noticed? not for me.
