Stop Ranking for the www

Hi All

I started one of my sites a while ago and didn't know an awful lot about backlinks back then. So I submitted both to http://mydomain.com and http://www.mydomain.com.

For the past months however I started trying to rank for just http://mydomain.com.

Recently I put my domain into Marker Samurai's Rank Checker and noticed that the ranking page for my main keyword is the www one. Even though it has a lot less backlinks pointing to it.

Does that affect my ranking in anyway? and how will I "let google know" that I don't want to rank for that one.

    yes, I made that same mistake, but on a quite lower scale, just about hundred links are pointing to my

    I am using free blog so I can't do anything to fix that, although those links would surely come in handy.

    I've searched for this issue, and I've heard about some 301 redirection...thing. But I am not sure if that is connected with your problem at all.

    Anyway, that doesn't work for my free blog, so I don't bother with that anymore. Just one more lesson I learned from experience.

    Go to google webmaster tools and you can set a preferred domain with or without the www all links for www will count towards the without it if you set it properly! Good luck!

    Wow...so much bad advice here.

    Check out the link that InternetMarketingIQ left above for a good answer. You can also look up the "canonical link element" for more info. And of course the 301 redirect is a good solution if that's an option.

      This is an important issue. www is considered a subdomain of mydomain.com. You can also have multiple sub-domains such as members.mydomain.com or help.mydomain.com and they can all have separate rankings so you can see the issue. A 301 redirect will solve this issue for the most part. Ideally you would redirect mydomain.com to www.mydomain.com There are still other things like mydomain.com/ and mydoman.com that Cutt's describes in the article posted earlier but I think those are less severe.
