Ok pretty newbie question here so don't cringe please..
Have seen the terms thrown around quite a bit and am actually pretty sure I know when to use the three.. but the question I can't seem to find answered around the forum is... why? and what?

So could someone please explain (since I can't find) exactly what each of them does and why each is used to make backlinks more valuable?

Thanks!

Basically all three are meant for building backlinks to your website, or blog. The more backlinks you have, the more popular your site becomes to google, bing, and yahoo.

Bookmarking: Basically all bookmarking is, is submitting your website/articles/videos/etc.. to bookmark directories such as, stumbleupon, digg, reddit, etc...

RSS: RSS, is basically a feed of your website and all the content. You can submit your RSS feed to RSS directories, which will help spread your content, and build backlinks.

Pinging: Is a feature mainly found it blogs, that basically just notifies all the online news aggregators that you have updated your website with new content. You can also ping regular websites with tools like Autopinger - Automates Ping Blog and Podcast for Free .

I hope this answered your question, and gave you insight onto why these are crucial for site promotion

Well, technically, pinging is used to let sites know you've updated. I'm not really sure if it actually builds links, but either way it has benefits.
