Hi everyone,

I have a bit of a problem here. My adwords account seems to not track my campaign very well or at all. I make sales but my conversion tracking shows zero conversions. I know that most of the sales come from the PPC campaign since organic traffic isnt much at this point.

Any ideas?

Cheers

    Hi Jan,

You need to place the AdWords tracking code on your thank you page to track conversions. Additionally, you need to ensure that the page has time to load completely and execute the client-side script before redirecting.

If you have already done this then you may have other issues that need to be resolved. If so, let me know and I will try to help!

        Hi Jan,

The Conversion tracking code is a client-side script that runs after the page in which it is placed has finished loading. It requires about 1 to 2 seconds to complete after that page is finished loading in your customer's web browser. Anything that may interfere with the loading of that page, or redirecting away from that page, is a likely culprit.

We often rely on third party payment processors to complete our ECommerce transactions. Sometimes they experiment with the process and include interaction after the payment confirmation. In those cases we always lose some conversion tracking data and you should request an opt-out if possible.

It's more likely that your own shopping cart process is the culprit.

We need to look at your checkout process. When a person submits the final payment confirmation, which page loads? Is there a page between your thankyou page (where you placed your tracking code) and that final payment confirmation? Perhaps a "Print Your Receipt" page? Is that page served by your payment processor or your own web server? Is there a long delay in loading that page? Are there links that allow you to navigate away before the page has loaded completely?

Don is right. The culprit is likely the shopping cart software you are using.

I use Paypal and after payment is made the user then goes to a thank you page on my own server with receipt and option to optin. Everything seems to be working fine but maybe the users do not get to that thank you page after checkout.

      I'll have to investigate that.

      Cheers for the help peeps

I use PayPal and never had a problem. Just got to make sure you enter the correct URL you want to send them to after they pay. But it works every time.

One thing I forgot to mention and maybe is why you don't see conversions. The conversion will be counted towards the keyword and ad that the user clicked on the day they clicked. If they do a search and clicked your ad on Monday but only buy on Friday, the conversion will show on your Monday data, not Friday. It is also tracked for 30 days so any Adwords conversions after that time won't show in your account.

Note that if you also use Analytics, the conversion will show on Friday, the day the conversion occurred, so the numbers will not match. Analytics also tracks for a longer period, can't remember if it's 60 or 90 days.

Ok So I deleted my tracking from my adwrds account and started over with a new tracking code. I pasted that code into the source of my thank you page. Went to paypal and created a test button, uploaded it to my server, went to google and clicked on my ad, bought my product and today still no conversion is showing in my adwords account.

I have no idea what's up with this tracking issue. I really need it to work properly so I can fine tune my campaigns.

Also, another question I have is this. If I promote a squeeze page on adwords and collect emails and then follow up. If the user then buys from me a few days later through an email follow up will that sale get tracked to the keywords the user clicked on Google? Does the tracking work with cookies?

Cheers for the help in advance.

        Hi Jan,

Conversion data is usually delayed by up to 24 hours. You may want to give it a little longer to show up.

You may also need to look for the possibility of a page redirect that may prevent the client-side conversion tracking script from running or perhaps not allowing enough time to execute. Also look for client-side scripts that may have errors that are preventing your tracking script from firing.

The tracking seems to work fine now. Thanks for the help.

I still have one question though. Does the tracking work with cookies? For instance, if I send traffic to a lead capture page and follow up with email and they buy a few days later from an email follow up will google still track that sale to the original keyword the person clicked on in google?

          Cheers

Yes. Adwords uses a 30-day cookie. So as long as you got the code on the page you want to track conversions and the buyer gets there, it will be tracked.
