Getting Backlinks from Online Forums?

Some SEO gurus advise us to participate in relevant forums to generate backlinks -- the ones in our signature files.

Is there anybody out there with a service to research forums and determine which ones are relevant to your niche, AND have their posts indexed by Google?

If I am a member of a Yahoo! or Google group, how do I determine whether the posts are indexed?

Thanks in advance for any tips you can provide!

why do you need a service to do this?

    simply goto google and type:

    intitle:forum nichetype

ie.. for a programming forum you would type:

    intitle:forum programming

and you have your list of forums to use

Yeah except you have to filter out the forums that don't have signature or profile links enabled. Based on platform you try to use, ratio of actually worthy forums to "link disabled" forums can be quite small. Kinda the reason why we launched SEOBDB for public

Thats actually pretty easy once people learn how to search. It doesn't require ANY product just the knowledge.

Haha, of course it's easy... when you are not doing it properly. So let me guess, your "knowledge" is querying Google with some footprints and then those results are the backlinks?

I see no problem with doing it this way as long as you aren't breaking the rules. And if you know more about why he shouldn't why not share it instead of patronising him.

Well the problem is that Mike's message said that basically all it needs is "knowledge" which is true but it's not as simple as he makes it sound. By the way, he sells a product that teaches this "knowledge" so there's a bit bias there. But that's not the issue. The real issue is that while it's true that you can easily find backlinks like that with Google and footprints, it takes a lot of time to filter out the forums that actually work and are not just some random results.

Also if you search with basic footprint like 'intext:"powered by [insert platform]" inurl:"viewprofile=" intext:"signature"' you will lose all relevancy because profile pages don't usually give very good content to Google to categorize them. So when you search with that kind of footprints and your keyword, you are not going to get very relevant results. Then if you go with footprint like 'intext:"powered by [insert platform" keyword", then you don't know if the profiles are visible to search engines, do they have homepage field enabled or is there signature enabled.

We check for all this in SEOBDB so just trust me on this, it's not that easy to get good backlink candidates with relevancy when it comes to forums.

Curses! You gave away the goldmine! At least one of 'em.

Just goes to show that finding this stuff is easier then one would think.

Now no more giving away the ridiculously easy and obvious ways to find lots and lots of backlinks.
