Apart from the link wheel ... which Google seems to be catching onto, what other stratergies are available that work?

I've been thinking about developing my own, but I'm going to be working with 1000's of properties eventual that link to a sales page.

The properties are not the issue, I have the tools and what not to take care of all that. The issue is linking them without getting smacked with the Google stick.

Anyone throw any light on this?

Why link them to each other?
You can use the pyramid linking pattern where all your web 2.0 properties link ONLY to your Website and not to each other. You can then use more low quality links like social bookmarking/RSS/Blog Commenting to link to the web 2.0 properties to make them stronger.

Awesome stuff! makes me think about the whole Quantity Vs Quality debate. It seems that ranking is veering more towards quality.

Yeah man...I get what you're saying. The "splogs" never seem to get any of the Domain pagerank because they're always so Low quality.
If you write a good article there's a higher chance it'll be linked to within the Web property by other pages and thus gain some pagerank/authority.

Ah. I just purchased SENuke. The plan was at first to just blast out quality articles and do that across a range of niches. See if I can generate a $1 a day from 1000+ articles.

But I was looking into link building for something else, but still using SENuke.
