A Question for Warrior SEOs

I've got a personal question for the Warrior SEOs out there. What are your ultimate goals for learning search-engine optimization? (i.e. a steady paycheck with an inhouse SEO job, promoting your own website, starting a consulting business?)

I'm doing research on this question for an upcoming blog post I'll be writing about how/why some people (including myself) are drawn into the world of SEO. Looking forward to the comments and understanding why you chose SEO as a career path or subject for learning.

When I first really got into it I had an odd reason.

I searched for something on Google and I clicked the first result and the answer on the page was complete BS. So I thought to myself what kind of power people can have misleading people.

I wanted that power, so I learned how to do it.

Then eventually I figured out you can make money doing this and the rest is history.

      Sorry, couldn't resist!

For me I fell into it when trying to get a blog I run ranking decently in what is a very competitive niche... I am quite proud of what I have achieved there so far, but it has given me the bug. What was meant to be a hobby has become something altogether more and now I suppose I do it for a pay cheque.

Writing is still my first online 'love' but SEO is certainly an addiction and one I am enjoying. The mixture of the challenge and the money are my main motivating factors - almost always with my own sites.

My ultimate goal from learning SEO is to promote my own websites and hopefully make a living online. I think learning SEO is an integral part of operating a successful online business. It's one of the key aspects of online business IMO. Some people don't feel that way, they rely on other traffic sources. For me SEO is the best because all the traffic you get is targeted and free.

Cuz...I've been doing it for large corporations since 82...remember bulletin boards.

And...it's still the best Chess Game out there.

I like the stability of a quaranteed paycheck. I just want one that I will be able to stay at home and away from punching a time clock.

Great responses. I might as well give my 2-cents on how I got involved with SEO as well. My career in SEO began unexpectedly when I landed a copywriting position with an internet marketing company shortly after graduating college. It was there I began learning about SEO and getting extremely interested in marketing online. I also began to realize how much $$ there was to be made online, which is always a good motivator.

Eventually, I quit for an in-house SEO\PPC position. Currently, I own a small SEO business and am trying claw my way into the information/content marketing game. I am always looking for new ways to acquire/meet new SEO clients to build my business.

Like Debra, I love what I do, but want to be able to do it wherever and whenever I want.

My ultimate goal is passive income - I don't want to have to do the 9-5 anymore! I used to be self-emplyed, contracting for clients, but would even like to cut that part out! until my plans for world domination pan out though I'm angling for a steady paycheck from an in-house position.
