Hi

I was wondering if anyone could help please?

I recently purchased an existing website that is quite established and I think an authority site as it ranks 40 in google for very competitive keyword, lets say its called iBuilder.com. It currently ranks for say a word like website design as I said around page 4 with only 150 links and 510 mil results.

Anyway I purchased another premium domain (no site on it yet) say its called WebDesign.net. I have decided I want to rank for "web design" and want to build a new site on WebDesign.net.

So am thinking I will redirect iBuilder.com to WebDesign.net with 301 as there is no chance of getting iBuilder.com in the top 5 of google anyway.

Now iBuilder ranks 100 in google for "web design" as its a secondary keyword.

My questions are

1. Should I change the iBuilder titles, on site seo to reflect "web design" the new keyword prior to the move or just leave it as is and do the redirect? I mean its still a related keyword but not exact.

2. Should I redirect and copy the same content over to the new site or can I launch the new site with new optimized content and then do a redirect at same time?

Note the new domain does have the exact keywords I want to rank for - in this example web design, so what I am hoping that both strategies will propel my new site much faster

Thanks alot

MPC

I would suggest to place a 100% identical copy of "iBuilder" onto the second site and then use Google Webmaster Tool's Change Of Address tool (which also involves 301 redirecting).

I did this to change a site with several #1 spots in google and it worked flawlessy, in a week or so the new domain name replaced the old one. After a month or two I began changing the contents of the new site, with no adverse effects. Probably this could have been done earlier, but I wanted to play safe.

BTW, there's a long discussion about this on webmaster tool's blog, including a nasty issue with verification (you'll have to verify both domains, but one with the meta tag and the other with html file because once you redirect them, GWT would not be able to verify both with just one method).

Changing things prior to the move or altering the site's structure is likely to penalize your rankings. Hope this helps!
