Obviously, inbound links and content are more important. But, I would like to know if anyone has any experience or knowledge about this issue.

Will it improve your ranking at all?

As long as your domain does not end in the following: .info, .gmail, .tv, .ca you should not have any problems just be patient, and do your best to consistantly drive traffic there.

Sorry, I wasn't completely making myself clear.

Let's say I have a big website "Widgets.com" and on this site I sell blue widgets, green widgets, small widgets, etc...

Now, what if I decided to buy numerous domains such as "purplewidgets.com, bigwidgets.com, yellowwidgets.com", put up a page of content and a link back to my "Widgets.com" site.

Will the smaller specific widget sites bring in more traffic than if I kept the content on my bigger widget site.

    Thanks

First, yes domain name matters. It isnt neccassary, but keyword domains will take a lot less work to maintain rankings.

As to the post you made above - If you are going to do this, you have to host the sites on seperate hosting accounts. You dont want to link a bunch of sites together that are on the same hosting account. So, this really isnt a good option.

        Really?

I am about to purchase 11 keyword rich domains, but I only have one hosting account.

I am not doubting you, but why is it a problem? Can google and other search engines really tell if they are all hosted on the same account?

what is wrong with doing blue.widgets.com, red.widgets.com and the rest so that they all rank highly on their own and drive traffic to the original?

Yes, your domain name or any of your URL's should included the keywords that you plan on targeting and wanting to achieve improved rankings for. It is very important in my opinion. What you could do is set one site such as widgets.com then have all of your other pages or colors of widgets be something like IE. widgets.com/red then widgets.com/blue and so on.This way you target red widgets, blue widgets and so on plus you have your keyword in the URL which Google loves to see. I don't think it would help you to set up a bunch of little sites.I think you would be better served setting up one site and then back linking to the different pages. The good part this is that you'll only need one domain name which would reduce your costs and have the same effect as a bunch of little sites. I hope this has helped

    Sparhawke,,

That's the problem. Will I get more traffic with all the content on one big site or will I attract more traffic if I decide to put similar content (but of course less) on a one page more specific site?

The more pages you have the more keywords you can target,
the more keywords you can taget the more traffic can get and
in saying that if you have 50 pages on one site they will pull a lot
more than 5 sites with 10 pages.

Sparhawke I love the way you think

Yes domain does matter, it is one of many things that play a role

Go with the supersite, it is easier to get higher rankings with a more powerful site. Websites (like WarriorForum) will rank will on powerful words just becuase of the website.

    I would (and I do)
    create
    www . wigdets.com/red-wigdet
    www . wigdets.com/blue-wigdet

    Cheers,
    Mukul

Absolutely...keywords in the domain itself is a definite quality signal with the mothership (G).

Keywords are everything when it comes to your site, your campaign and your potential success. They are primary when it comes to determining your Google page position.

Yes, exact keywords in domain name do help a lot and in my limited experience are given an extra boost by caffeine.

I always include the right keywords in the domain name. Does it help SEO wise? I'm not sure, I think it does, but it is almost like a superstition to be honest. It does increase click through rates from search results though, I am sure of that!
