Anchor text in article.. Where should it go

I have read alot about where to put the anchor text at in articles. Some people say just put two or three at the bottom. Some say put it in the first sentence. Some say put in in the article itself. My main question is why does it matter where it goes.
Isn't our main goal is to get google to index the site. Isn't that the reason why we turn then into rss feeds and then ping them to get the anchor text. Yes we do get some traffic from these articles but isn't our main goal to be on the first page of google.
