I have a couple general questions about online directories...

1. Do you always have to pay to get your link on a directory?
2. Is there somewhere you can go to get a list of popular directories?

    I don't know why you want these links but if it is for SEO you should be aware that Google has "slapped" most directories and discounted their backlinks.

    For finding free list of online directories you can better use a directory submission software.

    There are many web directories which are free, paid as well as reciprocal link based. You can choose any of them and according to their Alexa rankings.

      Not always you have to puy to get list in high PR directories, you can find many directories that offering free listing but will be approve for 1/3 month.

    submitting your site to directories is not the best approach to take... there are other things you could do with your time that will have a much bigger impact for your business.

    however there are a couple of directories you should submit to... the first is DMOZ which is 100% free but might take a little time to get accepted...

    the second is the Yahoo Directory... which costs money... lots of it. and is only recommended for once you have made a decent amount of money from your site/blog already...

    also, I wanted to note that in my opinion, the best strategy for linkbuilding(building backlinks) is to create linkworthy content and then promote that content to other blogs/sites so they link back to you!

    there is a free one from a member on this forum, search for the name Nemanja and this person has free tools for directory submissions which doesnt cost you a single penny!!!

    Directory Submissions used to be heavily spammed.

    Now they don't bring any value for ranking on google. They still, however help you rank for bing and yahoo.

    There are many free directory submission sites in the internet. You don't have to pay for your site to be listed there. But when you submit your link, it will take a quite time to for that particular directory submission site to review your link since it is only free, but when they approved your link, you can see it there.
