Canonical urls for specific keywords?

Is it possible to specify a canonical url for certain keywords/backlinks? From what I understand once you have a canonical command in the head of a page (or pages) Google will show only the specified page in the SERPs, for whatever keywords it deems worthy. The pages with the command, which may or may not be real duplicates, are ignored and dont show up.

But what if I want one of those "duplicate" pages show up in the SERPs as well, just for other keywords? (as it is differently optimized for that?) Is this possible? In other words can I also have control over the keywords with a canonical redirect?

The reason Im asking is because I had set up a page not too long ago that had "some" content from another page but it wasn't an overall duplicate (maybe 50%). Apparently this was enough for Google to have the original page disappear from the SERPs. And only after I erased some of the keywords from the "duplicate" page did google give me back my rankings for the original page. Now my problem is that the "duplicate" page (albeit more tweaked now) has specific keywords I would like it to rank for too.

Thanks for any input!

  • Do any of these pages rank on the first page for your target.

If not then why bother? You are worrying about something that won't make any difference.

    Focus on what works.

You keep hitting this same issue. If you are worried about duplicate content (which does not matter) then stop creating duplicate content.

And being in the "SERP's" doesn't matter unless you are ranking for the first page.

Of course I was/am ranking on the first page, very highly actually, otherwise I wouldnt bring this up. But even if it wasn't on the first page, why? Obviously, if you have a page that you are targeting with your backlink campaign your goal will be getting on SERP page 1. So naturally if it gets filtered out by Google on its way there you will try everything to get it back on the way.

Anyhoo, the duplicate content issue has been resolved. Wordpress had generated some link structures that were kinda out of my control and before I noticed the duplicate content damage was done (see http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...ing-field.html). I sure learned from it!
