Here's the story. I've been doing SEO for about a month
now on a niche site. Some of the keywords are sick - low
competition, high search volume. Every niche marketer's
wet dream.

Here's where the weird part comes in. Some parts of the
day, I'm at the top three spots for all of my targeted
search terms. Then, say, a few hours later, I'll be gone
completely, into the abyss of Google.

Any reasoning on why this might happen? I mean, I don't
even stay on the top three spots long enough to get any
decent traffic.

Any help would be awesome.

Looks like your still going the google dance.

Which would mean your backlinking campaign's/sites are fairly new or only just recently been indexed.

You just need to keep on backlinking and then soon enough they will settle down (hopefully at the top) and stay there until your competitors bump you down by getting more backlinks than them.

The reason Google likes wordpress Blogs
so much is because they are current...

Google loves updated content... So if your
site has a topic that someone else writes
about in a time more recent than when you
made your entry, your site will be pushed
    down inevitably...

So anything new and fresh is prioritized,
and when it's not fresh and hot anymore
your site creeps back up to the top...

I would say: Get a blog: Cuz you're lucky
your getting the traffic you are... If any
good SEO guy finds the keywords that you have

I can almost guarantee that they will Dominate
You... If you wanna rank with SEO get incoming links
    like SmartEntrepreneur said-

-and if you don't wanna get a blog, get your
people to social bookmark your site.

Cuz the more your site gets digged (or dugg),
Stumbled upon, farked- or whatever. The more
Google will consider your content to be Fresh...

So you can control where you appear in the SERP...

    Good Luck Bro... Peace out...

Actually too much bookmarking can be bad. On some of the posts I made in one of my sites the bookmark links rank there where my posts should be but that's not even indexed
As about the google dance, Mark is right, get more links to settle.

    First:

    Do what Olivier Vasquez said.

    Then:

Keep with it. Backlink like crazy - you should get up in the morning and look for forums and blogs for your keywords, and you should be doing that before you go to bed. Before you look at a porn site, put in 5 backlinks. Before you eat a corn dog or whatever you like, do 5 backlinks. Before you do anything that you want to do, do 5 backlinks. Just keep repeating; make it your mantra.

    Then:

    Don't look at your results.

Look at them on the first of every month. It takes 2-3 weeks for anything to get picked up by even Google....and Yahoo doesn't pick up much of anything, and Bing is about 93% less than useless.

Don't look for day to day results, because you will want to kill yourself. Focus on improving month-to-month. It takes that long for any kind of results to show.

    I hope that helps.

Ok, dude, that made no sense. The only thing I can take from that is to keep watch over your backlinks - and that's a valid point. What I've really been flirting with, thinking about, is running nuke tactics on my competitors. I have to take my own backlinking efforts slowly, but what if I just blast my competitors with something like 500 backlinks in two days...they won't be a competitor anymore. I'm not too comfortable with that approach, but it's something in my head, and I am not sure that that's not what you're getting at, so please elaborate.
