Less Is More With Keyword Density Experiment...What are your thoughts?

hi all,

I have put out a few websites and have done research on keyword density. Believe it or not, less was more ie relevant keywords in the content in small amounts were rewarded with higher serp. Somehow I managed to rank number 5 for a fairly good keyword amongst a whole bunch of big company pages that were PR4 and above (also no backlinks!). On the other hand, I have sites that I consider to be much better , with backlinks, but with higher keyword density (most not ranking within first 4 pages of Ggl.) With these "better" sites I was definitely not stuffing because I was following the 2-3% formula. Interesting...

Any thoughts from your own experiences?

What you are experimenting is pretty interesting... But it's also hard to tell whether the keyword density is majorly contributing to the results you are getting or not... As you know there are many other factors affecting rankings so yo may want to share little more information here.. i.e. Are those sites targeting a same niche? Main keywords used in a title, Meta-description, Meta-Keywords, H1 tags, tags on images etc...

If everything else is equal other then the "keyword density", then the results you are getting is something we all should pay attention to...

Too many variables here I think. Keyword density, as long as you aren't stuffing, is probably way less significant than backlinking. Google may be "digesting your links" so give it some time. Personally, I always use the keyword 2-4 times on the page. I think that gets G to know what your site is about. After that, it's about human usability. If a human sees you stuffing, s/he will leave. And unless you isolate all the variables, you can't really tell for sure. I've seen Matt Cutts talk about this and he says that stuffing can get you pegged as SPAM but otherwise, keyword density is a subject that does not have nearly as much weight as it used to because of the implementation off-page seo.

  • People who worry about keyword density are wasting time. Include your keywords naturally and move on.

On site factors don't play a huge role in ranking. This is why sites that do not have a keyword phrase anywhere on a page can still rank for that keyword phrase.

Proximity is somewhat important in keywords as bots tend to crawl the top content first.

When people focus so much on onpage factors beyond title tags and a few related keyword references they tend to write artificially.

    Write for people.

I'll have to echo what was said already. I don't think keyword density makes any difference. Where your keywords are found on your page is far more important.... proper on-site SEO.

If you're writing high word-count articles or blog posts you're far better off cramming in additional long-tail and alternate keywords.
