When you look at the competition in google, the top 10 pages... Do you look at the total back links to that page or the domain?

    Yes, look at the domain age, Y link and final is PR as well.

    I would look at the links to that page. In addition I would also look at the page title, how optimized that page is for the targeted keyword etc. (on page in addition to off page optimization)

    If it is the links to the domain that you have to consider, you and I would never be able to beat amazon.com etc. But we do beat amazon that has like 160,000,000 pages and 279,020,972 links to the domain.

    I don't agree with tonykoay2002's comment above on PR. I am beating an amazon page with PR 4 with a domain of mine that is PR 0. My website is optimized for that keyword way better than that particular page of amazon both on page and off page.

    consider the competition first. It's total number in the serps, then move to domain age, and then the backlinks

    Domain page pr and incoming links should be investigated. Also, check for double listings and web 2.0 sites.
