Truth About Google Page Ranking

Hello everyone!

I was having some drinks with a old friend of mine last night and we got to talking about Google and what it takes to get ranked with them these days. The reason I am making this post is because our conversation became very interesting and I am not sure if I believe what he was trying to explain to me. Let me share with you his insight, and you let me know what you think.

As our conversation focused in on Google, I started to explain to him how I search for my keyword phrases using Google and Google's free keyword tool.

I use Google search engine to check the comp. level of my desired keyword phrase by putting my keyword phrase in quotes, like this: "my keyword"

I then hit search. If my search brings me back less than a total of 5,000 results I move forward in seeing how many people are searching this keyword using Google's very own free keyword tool.

Where my friend piped in was in regards to the way i check my keyword comp. level using Google "my keyword"

What he told me is to not just take the number of results given to me as truth. He said I need to scroll all the way to the bottom of the page and I will see a bunch of numbers, usually between 1-10. He told me to click the highest number shown until I can no longer go any higher. For example, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and so on.

What he thinks is Google falsely packs in search results that are not accurate. And once I reach the highest page value to scroll back to the top of the page results and that is my actual comp. of search results.

Not dont forget, we were both drinking last night, but I did try it this morning and the results are shocking!

What do you think of this? If you have questions, please ask here or shoot me a PM.

Thanks!

I've covered this a couple of times

google will only return 1,000 max results for any search query.

you will never have more than 1,000 pages as true competition.

the other 22,000,000 are meaningless because they are trapped in the supplemental results and are not true competition. Google does not think those pages are relevant or important enough to show in search results.

at the worst... you only have to beat 999 other pages.

set your search results to display 100 results per page then click on page 10. this will be results 901 - 1000. whatever number the results end at... that is the extent of your total competition.

All lot of the junk like searching for something with quotes, searching for sites that have the keyword in the title or url are all cute and cuddly but they don't mean a thing.

Yeah, I know... it sounds really cool to be #1 for Results 1 - 10 of about 10,700,000 for backlinks when the reality is Results 801 - 885 for backlinks.

Aside from that, the only thing that really matters is the strength of the sites in the top 10.

What he thinks is Google falsely packs in search results that are not accurate.
The number given is the total number of pages indexed that have the keyword on the page or title or whatever so it's not a false number but google does not feel that those pages are relevant or important enough to be included in the search results so they are hidden away in the supplemental results.

Search for your key phrase first, then search for it in quotes, this will give you a better idea of what you're looking at because as Jason says, you're going to see a bunch of "relative" results too...I didn't know it was capped at 1k, but regardless of the cap, you WILL get "relative" results with your results when you don't use the quotes. Google doesn't pack them with un-relative results (and if there are some I don't believe they do that on purpose) Look at both.
