Why does Google love EZA so much?

As far as I know, SEO optimization is about two things:
- On-page keyword optimization (title, body, meta tags, etc.)
- Getting backlinks
Sometimes I see a highly competitive keyword with EZA articles at or near the top. Frequently they will have ZERO backlinks in Yahoo Site Explorer and will be less keyword-optimized than their competition.
And yet these articles still rank at the top of results for keywords. Maybe not a keyword like "make money online" but often times EZA is at the top for highly competitive, marketer-saturated product name keywords and things like that...
Why are these EZA articles so high ranked?
The EZA homepage is only a PR6. Some people think that subpages of a site inherit a portion of the homepage's PR, but at only PR6, it can't make that much of a difference, can it?
Has Google injected some kind of magic secret rule into its ranking algorithm to give EZA content a bonus?
Or is there a regular function of the way that Google ranks things that explains this phenomenon?
