Hi.

How many PR 1 backlinks are required as an estimation to get to page 1 of google, assuming there is 10,000 competing sites for the keyword and strength of competition is low to fair?

[Apologies if this sounds like 'what the length of a piece of string'!]

Thanks.

Jim.

There are lots of other things required to get top position in search engines rather than backlinks. However quality of backlinks is more important than quantity.

You should always check the competition on the front page as a good indication to how eas it should be to rank.

Seo for firefox is a great timesaver for this although I favor Market Samurai.

Look for low page ranks and low page backlinks for low comp phrases.

        Hi Jim,

It could take just one backlink or you could have 100,000 backlinks and still not make into the top 10. SERP rankings are not based on the number of backlinks.

Search engines rank pages on the SERP based primarily upon relevance. Backlinks with the appropriate anchortext can help improve your page's relevancy score.

Sometimes all it takes is slightly better on-page optimization, other times it takes that extra boost you get from relevant backlinks. Not all backlinks have the same value and if there isn't anything relevant to your targeted keyword those backlinks give you no direct benefit.

Since you are competing with other pages, you need to understand the strength of those competing pages that are currently on page one. If you can bring your page's overall relevancy score higher than the page that holds position #10 then you have made it to the 1st page of the SERP for your targeted keyword.

Examine the page that currently holds position #10 and try to asses the strength of that page's on-page and off-page optimization efforts to determine what it will take to reach the 1st result page for your keyword. Chances are that you may find many of your competitors backlinks are not relevant to the targeted keyword, or that they have few relevant backlinks from high PR pages.

SEO For Firefox is a fantastic tool for checking this! Or just use yahoo site explorer if you don't want to install anything!

Then you want to check the number of backlinks and then even go further and check their PR too!

Then you will have a fairly good indication on how many and of what type you need!

To get PR1 it can't be clearly said that this number of links from PR1 pages will be enough. It also depends on the number of total links present in the page.So how much link juice you're getting from a link page is important.
