How the hell did this guy find THIS keyword ??

Hi Guys,

Something has just really stumped me !!

I came accross a site today that looked aload of rubbish, awful looking site really bad, so i was just playing around and thought i`ll enter the keyword in google keyword tool and have a smile to myself about how smart i am now with keywords and how far i`ve come in IM by seeing how this guys a total newbie and the mistakes hes made when picking this keyword ect ect.

But when i entered this keyword in googles keyword tool it gave a exact of 36,000 this suprised me as i was thinking it will be about 300 or so and hes made a big mistake he has no traffic !!

So i thought ok bet the competitions huge, so off to micro niche finder entered the keyword checked the SOC it gave a `5` !! with 180,000 pages !! Shocked again !!

So i turned on SEO firefox went to google entered the keyword checked the top 10... it gave 4 PR 0, 2 PR 1, 3 PR 2, and 1 PR 3 !!! again for a 36,000 searches a month in exact keyword how easy to beat is that !!!

Ok i thought i`ll check Spyfu as this is a adsense site, I thought got to be a really crap min CPC and no ads..Wrong !!! Min CPC $1 to $3.85 high, with 10 ads.

So ok i was well wrong this is a fantastic keyword i was impressed, But then i started thinking just how did this guy find this keyword ??

First here is the keyword.... "cheap flights to `name of a island`"

I wont say what the exact name of the island, So heres my problem how did he find it because if i just type into google keyword tool.. Cheap flights.. This long tail keyword doesn`t show up, I can see `cheap flights tp Austraila` `cheap flights to Europe` and cheap flights to a few other places but a 36,000 searched a month in exact keyword does not show up !!

Why does`nt it show ?? Can anybody tell me why just by typing cheap flights into google keyword tool this guys long tail keyword does`nt show, this has really got me confused because i now feel that there must be thousands of keywords i`m missing out on because this guy found a great one and i`ve no idea how he came accross it. what am i doing wrong or what is he doing right ??

WWhat do you guys think ?? Why does`nt it show in the keyword tool when entering `cheap flights` but other islands do with less searches ??

Any ideas !!

Cheers Jim

its relatively simple. I just let a few run with market samurai and MNF also, and i found some real gems

"cheap flights to puerto vallarta", "cheap flights to peru".... aruba, costarica etc..etc.. all have CRAZY search volume and green SOC in MNF.

He is in a niche where he can simply take a keyword like "cheap flights to" and then re-iterate it...it took me a minute with Micro Niche Finder to find those.

Another way is using a keyword tool which uses Google suggest and then let it run through LOTS of combinations like

    "cheap flights to a"
    "cheap flights to b"
    "cheap flights to c"

all the way down to "z" and then then the whole thing again "aa", "ab", "ac"...until zz. You would come up with more keywords than your brain can handle and then simple plug them into MNF or MS and analyze searches/title occurence (or SOC if you will).

Let me run another tool and try to find that one..might take a while tho.

Wow George I have seen that method touched on in some scripts and different search techniques but never even thought to use it in MNF. Holy crap that's genius

yes those scripts use Google suggest, heres an example to demonstrate how google suggest works:

      http://clients5.google.com/complete/search?hl=en&q="acne a"&client=firefox&inputencoding=UTF-8&outputencoding=UTF-8

where i use "acne a"....now let this run MANY times for all iterations, "acne b" ...etc..etc... Google suggest will always return a bunch of keywords.

Then take that whole bunch of keywords after you made it through your list from "acne a" to "acne zz" and import thousands of google suggest KWs into MS and check them.

      Its a long, long process

And of course, in our example you could "simply" run this through a database with cities, countries, islands etc..etc...

This is ONE kicka$$ way to find long tail keywords

Indeed. A prospective client wanted his description tag to say something like "we have inventory, buy one now". I told him that it was fairly ham-fisted, there's no keywords, and it's not good marketing. He replied, "that's my style and I like it", I told him that his customers won't care what he likes, it's all about them. He didn't give me any work after that, but I don't care. Anyone who doesn't want to hear good advice isn't worth working with. I was even going to work at a discount, but he was such a tool.

Anyway, nice thread with some good ideas. Thanks.

Wait...did you just support the idea that a marketer should realize that customers don't care what you like and then you gave an example of your client not caring what YOU liked?

yes i noticed this! I am not in that niche, thanks god

You can also bet that the PROs with the big sites might have serious SEO help, otherwise something like "cheap flights to cabo san lucas" wouldnt even come up in the search index.

It goes further...there are several niches where they have scripts to auto-create thousands and thousands of sites based on such recursive keywords. This makes them get pages indexed in Google for all kinds of keywords.

One example is the "reverse cell phone" niche where there are pages indexed if you search for a phone number. Some sites have hundred thousands of pages generated for phone numbers in certain bigger cities... so if someoene enters a phone nr. in google it comes up with their site like "looking for xxx-xxxx?" etc..etc.. same with "used cars in [city]" etc

(The "cheap flights to cabo san lucas" was the best i came up with after running a tool for several hours, just as a side-note. But VERY strong competition.)

      Hi guys,
Some great replys here to the post i started but whats really got me thinking is to how the google keyword tool actually works ? I just thought that when i enter a keyword i would get the top searches but the is has messed everything i thought i knew up.

Let me explain the keyword was `cheap flights to ----` so when i entered `cheap flights` into GKT i expected to see this keyword at the 36,000 searches point. But it wasn`t there WHY ??

Why is GKT showing these searches all less than the Island i found

      `cheap flights to austraila` 33,000 searches
      `cheap flights to europe` 18,000 searches
      `cheap flights to Lanzorote` 12,000

Why does GKT show a keyword search for the Island of Lanzorote and not the Island i found this site based on ??

Lanzorote has less searches then the Island i found why is it not in GKT search ??

I thought GKT brought back the top searches ? if the keyword i found had more seaches than Lanzorote why was it not include in the search what made GKT show Lanzorote and not the Island i found.

I of course have not mastered GKT because this has had my racking my brains for hours now can anybody tell me why

you can pm the that KW, i am not interested in that niche *at all*

Yes, usually you would think that KW tool (or Market Samurai) or Google suggests would return a highly searched keyword. That's why i think that maybe there might be something off with that keyword...maybe it doesnt really get as much searches? Verify simply by plugging into MS or GKT....what search volume do they say for that keyword?

I had a tool running several hours yesterday and the best i came up "CFT to cabo san lucas", the other one "CFT peru", but they have 300-400 ish daily and not 1000+. Maybe something is off with the match types? I had over 2000 keyword combos in the list and analyzed all of them. If THAT specific island is not in that list and it does INDEED get so much search volume...then i would be very puzzled.

Does this search volume appear for global or local (usa)? Some terms wont appear for global, some wont for local..i noticed this also.

nope..the island in question is nothing bizarre..otherwise it wouldnt have 1000+ searches a day. The KW just fricking doesnt come up in Google keyword tool.

    Ok,

jim is definitely on to something.

The keyword has indeed 1000+ daily searches, and i run MS (global AND local)..and i run MNF and both of those did not return the keyword. They returned other stuff, all right, but not this one which is VERY ODD considering it has excellent search volume.

HOWEVER - i run a tool yesterday which used that "google suggest method", it took like 3 hours to go through all combinations...and the keyword is IN my list of 2500ish i made yesterday.

    Which means:

MNF and MS both failed to bring this keyword up, but Google suggests does! <---

After i imported the list to MS it showed SEOTC (in tite) of 10.000, so i filtered it out. Although 10k "intitle" is not that bad, could be worse.

And in MNF it shows SOC of 5 because MNF combines all three intitle, inurl, inanchor...and then caclulates SOC from it.

The question is WHY MS and MNF are failing to come up with that keyword????

Makes you wonder what other keywords those tools might not show....i am really puzzled as to why!!

(Better question: Why does GKT not show this KW? MS and MNF pull data from Google KWT...so if GKT doesnt return it in the first place means that MS and MNF wont show it either.)

Edit: This is really confusing me now since the keyword/island is not something ominous.

Its like, let's assume that most people would search for "buy used cars in chicago", but Google just would not return "buy used cars in chicago", its simply left out and the next best thing coming up would be "buy used cars in atlanta" but with significant less search volume.

Just to add to Georges post the fact still is that a stright search with GAKT the simplest and in the gurus eyes the king of keyword tools did not bring it up in a stright George found it by doing fancy things that i`d never though of before.

So why doen`t GAKT or the other search tools bring up this Island but show less searched Islands like Cufu and Lanzorote of all places ?? Both Islands on the end of a longtail keyword and both lower search volumes ??

When i built my last site around `cd mixer` when i entered `cd mixer` into GAKT did i miss some higher searched keyword because GAKT did not show them in the results ?? If they didn`t show this Island how do i know there wasnt a better cd mixer keyword with higher searchers and what about the other keywords i search for coulod i of found better ??? Sure i know you can narrow your search down but this keyword is just not there !!

I have found the Google Keyword Tool (GKT) to be a little 'off' on some search terms as well.

    Example:

Do a GKT search for 'Hot Pink' and you would expect it to display the most searched for keywords containing 'Hot Pink'. Here are the top 4 results when I check and their 'exact' local searches per months:

    22,200 - hot pink
    5,400 - hot pink background
    1600 - hot pink chair
    880 - hot pink lips

One would assume then that those are the 'top' longtail keywords containing 'hot pink'

    * * * A L E R T * * *

    Here's a Freebie for someone....

Do a GKT search for ' hot pink purse' and it shows 1000 EXACT LOCAL searches per month and guess what....

according to Ajax Whois 2.0 - fast domain name search and whois

    hotpinkpurse.com
    hotpinkpurse.net
    hotpinkpurse.org

are ALL AVAILABLE as of 12:40 EST on 02 FEB 2010..... LOL

Lets see how long they remain available now... even though it has a relatively LOW search count, the .com TLD should go FAST !!!

I guess the point is... GKT does not show all variation of long tail keywords, you have to think outside the box and use your imagination...

then google suggests completes and shows the phrase. But GKT, MS, MNF and probably another zillion of tools dont even come up with this.

I am VERY interested in keyword research, by coincidence i was experimenting with Google suggest yesterday...and i need to say its EXTREMELY interesting from a KW research point of view.
Its also really, really good to find long tail keywords and keywords other tools simply dont show (for whatever reason).

    Good reply Michael !!
And of course thinking outside the box is very important but i kind of thought keyword tools where to help you find new exciting keywords to use, Not just to check search volume when you thought of a keyword yourself.
Again this is a huge keyword i keep thinking about doing something with it myself !!! But it cannot be found in a search simple as that WHY ?? Does this happen every time we use keyword tools are they just showing half the picture ?????

what do you mean ?? Are you asking if 1000 searches per day is good enough to make some money with ?? Well of course it is if you can rank for that keyword in the top 10 you have to do your homework on that one. 100 searches a day can make you bags of cash if you can rank in the top ten ..you know this already right i`m getting your question wrong ????

    Hamidoo07,

1000 searches per month is on the LOW end, at least for me. Of course it all depends on the value of the 'keyword'

Does it have a High CPC for creating an Adsense site around it?
Is it a High Priced physical product that has a good (10% or better) Affiliate program for it?
Can you market your own electronic product (e-book, report etc..) for it?

If so, then I might try it, after all it's only $6-$9 for the Domain plus your time to give it a shot...

I just hack...i mean wrote a simple PHP script which does Google suggest queries and spits out a list, in the same way as "keyword sniper pro" does.

The problem is that i need to cycle through several google datacenters because the insane number of queries, otherwise i am getting a temporary IP ban.

(Just to get an idea, quering all combos like "pictures of a", "pictures of b" ---> until "pictures of zz" is 712 queries where each can return 10 suggestions...)

It gets even more crazier if you think about that you can basically indefinitely recurse keywords, example:

You get suggestions for "pictures of (a,b,c,d,e,f...etc.)" and Google suggest returns
"pictures of animals"..but then you can go deeper and deeper, you could query each result then again like "pictures of animals (a,b,c,d,e,f....)" and then it could come up with "pictures of animals in the rain forest" or "pictures of animals to print" "pictures of animals for kids"

In other words you can dig into literally a zillion of keywords, its simply crazy.

I think you can do some stuff with it like running it through "best deals on X" and find keywords where no other tool would show you otherwise. Interesting stuff.

Michaels second post is perfect for your answer 1000 searches per month is low but it depends on what your selling and how much commission you can make just work the math out yourself.

Just want to try to get to the bottom of this `Cheap flights to `name of Island` keyword instead of going off on a `Hot pink purse` trip !!!

by the way..."pink laptop" 18.000 DAILY searches, 10.000 phrase, "pink laptops" 5425 DAILY searches, 3000 "phrase" DAILY.

I remember because i had a site once selling netbooks and laptops and "pink laptops", there is insane demand for this.

    But..forget this...MANY competing sites....

How are you confirming the "actual" searches per day?

I'm wondering if your keyword is really getting those thousand searches per day. The google tool that presents the local/global amounts is usually way off.

i am sure, MS wont lie. Once you "caught" the KW you can analyse it and see the numbers. Besides, this IS a pretty common travel location, i personally know people who went there. I can see this having this search volume.

By the way, IMHO OP could tell you the keyword except if he plans to do something with it himself. I dont think its a "perfect" keyword since it has 10.000 title competition pages and all the top #1 like travelpedia etc...etc.. HARD to outrank. I personally wouldn't see a need to keep it secret...but of course the OP found it so its on him

I search and look at global and in exact, Its not really the problem that the results maybe off its the fact that this keyword is a high search keyword and its not showing on keyword tools i`m not so interested if the actually search volume is way off or not

I recently developed an app which queires Google and I had a bit of a nightmare at first. I am still testing this but I don't think it's so much the 'seconds' delay between queries that is monitored but MORE the number of queries per hour. For example, what is the maximum number of queries, whether it be standard searches, site: or cache: queries an average person should need to make over a set period of time.

From my tests so far I believe when you get to about 70 'specific' queries, ie - cache / site, then Google places a temporary IP ban. If you write a script (which I WILL be) and run that so it queries Google no more than say 60 times per hour you MAY not have a problem.

Of course each queries can display a LOT of data / keywords that can be parsed out.

Wow, this is such a great thread, I'm so glad I jumped early on Keyword sniper...^^. Yes it takes some time to find all those golden keywords but it's worth every hour you let it run. I was thinking about why google wouldn't show all of the keywords in their keyword tool.

Now think of this: The Keyword tool was originally made for adwords advertisers even though a lot of SEO's use it all the time. Google certainly profits more if all smaller adwords advertisers go after the very same keywords, driving the CPC up. Maybe they only give those "exclusive long tail keywords" to the top dog advertisers they have lucrative contracts with and not the standard adwords advertiser using the keyword tool. Or they simply don't show it so that advertisers have to target less specific broad match keywords to get the volume of those long tails, driving the CPC up even more. Sounds like a weird conspiracy theory? Maybe, but they're certainly not the saints they want everyone to believe they are . After all it's a business and they have to maximize profits.

Google suggest is a very different story. The focus here is to be as user freindly as possible, so really every long tail keyword shows up making the user think how great google is. So this is really a genius way of keyword research.

Anyhow, I'm sitting here with a list of 100 long tail keywords with close to no competition and high search volume, knowing i have to crank out a lot of adsense niche sites during the next weeks making great profits from all those broad match advertisers...

    jimkirk1943,

Sorry for the delayed response, but life gets in the way sometimes.

You asked if I had found anything yet.

Well, all I can verify at this time is that everything you and GeorgR have reported so far, I have duplicated.

The keyword does have ~40,000 exact searches per month, It does NOT show up on keyword tools using "cheap flights to", It does show up when you type in the complete phrase with the island name in it, and it does show in Google Suggest when you type in 'cheap flights to ...' and the first letter of the island name.

As to why GKT and most keyword tools do not find all the most relevant long tail keywords....

I guess that is why we are all still reading this thread

    Michael

Anyone that owns Scrapebox can do the same thing with the Keyword Scrape tool and an excel spreadsheet to generate the base keywords. It supports proxies etc so only takes a minute or so to complete.

I`m not quite sure what you mean..can do what with scrapebox ??
I`m still racking my brains as to why this keyword isn`t showing and if this one isn`t showing how many more 40,000 exact searches a month keywords are we missing and how can we better use keyword tools to find these longtail keywords because i bet somebodys finding them ..What do you guys think ??

yes because SB also supports Google suggest...but it also only shows the keyword one you enter "cheap flighs to [LETTER]"....and you have to feed it the list, all right.

I'm sorry, I'm not sure what you are saying there?

All I was saying is that people who have Scrapebox can use the Keyword Scrape tool to quickly get the list of keywords that you were talking about earlier in the post, using the Google Suggest function. (Not everyone knows all of the features of SB so was just highlighting another way to get the data without having to write custom scripts). The list with all of the letters added can be quickly done in Excel using the Concatenate function. Paste the entire list (52 keywords) into the SB query list and away you go. You can also put the results back into the query list and keep expanding from there.

Just feed the final results list into Market Samurai and process to get the other details.

Very interesting thread. What's nice to see is how everyone is putting their heads together to figure out why the KW is not showingup in most tools.

What i'd like to know is
    1) How many other keywords are there that are ( not in the same niche per se ) not showing up in most keyword tools and have potential.

    2) How to find those KW's !

    Gonna keep following this thread.
