Total NOOB Question re: Backlinks

Good Morning Warriors!

I have a few questions about backlinks. Could you please explain to me the hierarchy of backlinks? Which type are most important (link on the front page of CNN - I get that)

Web 2.0 links?
Blogs?
Forums?

You see I've been backlinking and my "actual" backlink count has not gone up at all with google. I am seeing some results in my SE rankings, but not in the actual backlink count?

I've subscribed to Angela & Pauls, and have done some other work in my niche to find sites.

But which type of Web 2.0 links should I be focussing on? Or should I really be concentrating my time with reciprocal links on actual sites?

I know there's no WRONG way to do it, but I'd really love some guidance so I'm not wasting a bunch of time on time wasters.

Thanks very much!

Use Yahoo to check your backlinks. Google doesn't reveal all backlinks.

Google's backlinks count is anything but reliable. You can get better results using Google WebmasterTools (http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/) and Yahoo Site Explorer (Site Explorer - Yahoo! Site Explorer).

Just so you will know, google only shows a sample of the backlinks, and only updates this sample every month or two (even though they actually know about more backlinks than they are displaying). A more dependable source to see the the backlinks is Yahoo.

I don't know if your plans are short term or long term for the site you are building, but I always tell people to imagine you are a google employee doing a manual review of the links pointing to your site. Will they seem legit and of sufficient quality?

Blogs and forums are good if you aren't just posting totally unrelated links. Also, you might want to consider submitting to directories, because you can post to the category that is semantically related to your link.

    Good luck!

    Hi BCBuster

I would focus on any site that is indexed regularily by seach engines. Article directories are good, also fourms that are in your niche. Post on digg as well, which is great if your article is dug up, it will get noticed by search engines.

    All the best...

It's definitely a long term site. And I've run with Yahoo site checker and Google webmaster tools....
My main competition has over 1300 links and 500 links respectively, and I'm in the mid-200's. That is running their sites through the Yahoo & Google Tools...+ using the Firefox plug in.
We're all authority sites in a micro niche. I KNOW the one with over 1300 links paid a SEO company big bucks to get her backlinks. Should I just run them through the site checker and "borrow" those links? None of them are on any high PR sites that's for sure and although some of them are related to our industry (Gift Baskets), most of them are not.

It's just that I have a business to run, and I want to make sure I'm being efficient with my time!

I will look into directories....thanks for that tip! Is there a BIG LIST OF DIRECTORIES somewhere I can look at?

Thanks everyone...you're saving me a bunch of trial and error (time and money!)by answering my questions!
