Put the verification code in index.php file.

Create an account in Google webmaster tools. Then add your site there. Then you will be prompted to choose a verification method. Easiest option is to go for a meta tag verification.

Get the meta tag and go to wordpress admin panel of your web site and go to editor. Find the Header.php file and just place your meta tag there. That will do the job for you.

I don't use the meta tag way myself, but this is my preference. I prefer to upload the html file to the root directory and validate that way, quick, easy and no code changes required.
