Link Building for Clients - How To Advice Needed

I'm familiar with link building for my own sites but I was wondering what people do for link building FOR their clients.

For my own sites I post on related forums with a signature, make good replies on blogs, submit articles, etc, all with good anchor text keywords when possible.

The question is, how do I do this for a client? I can tell them the importance of all of these things, but what does someone offer when they offer "link building" as part of a comprehensive SEO offering? I know I can submit to directories for them, but since the above things seem to need to be done by the person involved, how can I contribute? Am I supposed to post on forums for my client, for example? What can my role be in this process?

Any advice is much appreciated, and I'd love to look at any resources that may be available on a "tutorial for offering link building services" -- even commercial solutions.

Thanks.

Man if you have clients, why aren't you buying links on
high PR sites? All you're doing is free stuff.

I get emails all the times from people wanting to buy links.
    And I'm selling.

I let one go yesterday for $90 CAD. Only ended up with
$75 US and that was for one year! Oh well. Times are tough.
