backlinks making me dance?

I've been building some backlinks to some of my inner pages (inconsistently) and I noticed that those particular pages are beginning to drop off for their keyword.

Is it normal for them to drop off for a while? Do they usually come back to their original rank or even higher?

thanks,

My psychic powers tell me your backlinks are untargeted.

What is happening is that the people seeing your backlinks aren't interested in your offer, so they either don't click through to your page or they click through and leave quickly. Search engines think this means your page sucks, so they lower your rankings.

      whoh whoh,

i had no clue that google took CTR of your links into account.

whatabout profile links being so valuable? i've used them to get on google page 1 for some very difficult keywords

This is a real pain in the butt,

I have noticed when I do a heap of posts or linkwheels all pointing to my site it dissapears from the face of google in less than 24 hours, then comes back in a day or two, sometimes a week, but when it comes back it comes back strong which is an upside to all this.

I do think that if you build too many backlinks too quickly it can make you dance around and moved all over the place.

It should settle by 2 weeks time, but this always seem to happen when you build a lot of links but I also agree with the poster above that people could be clicking through your site and clicking out that makes your ranks slip sometimes.

Google is an arse, and they seem to play the game how they want, there is not many ways you can harness and control how they rank your pages and where they stick them, but you can certainly keep working hard and building strong links and over time your page will rank well, there is no quick fix to getting ranked well in google overnight and NOT be moved any time soon by either the google dance or downranking of your site.

Just keep at it, it will work out in the long term, just be sure to post quality stuff on your site

As many as you can "physically" do until your indexed and stable and have some trust.

          Or ....

Build a linkspam firewall around your $$$ site. Vox, LiveJournal, Squiddoo, wordpress.com, blogger.com, go finda few wpmu sites on good clean hosts, multiply, tumblr - web 2 sites. Put a goodpiece of content that wond get canned and put 2 links on each page 1 to one of the other sites, and1 to you $$$ site.

Then ... go backlink the snot out of your:

          Vox url
          Blogger.url
          wordpress.com url
          livejournal
          squidoo
          tumblr
          multiply
          typepad micro
          Eza
          GoArticles

all those above sites will focus their juice on your $$$ page[s]

that way you'll never need to ask how many links to build per { hr | day | month | quarter | year | lifetime | eternity }. You can build links with utter impunity - and likely not risk your $$$ site.

This is an Excellent idea!! i like this alot. Do you have some sort of mindmap of how this would look. I was looking into doing something like this and put in some links from some video hosting sites linking to all of the above.

Classic Google Dance. Ignore it and keep moving forward. It's not new and it's probably not gonna change anytime soon, so learn to live with the aggravation. Or maybe don't rely on free Google traffic, but that's easier said than done for most of us.

It will come back even stronger, so don`t worry about them. Keep on building those backlinks.

That is normal scenario. Make sure that you do constant link building with a moderate number of links per day and wait for the results. They will show up in some time. That is from my experiences.

What you are describing might not be the Google dance, it could just be that fresher and better SEO'd(on page and off page) content and sites might be overtaking you. I say this because you said you'd been building links inconsistently and didn't say how far your pages had dropped in the rankings.

If it is the Google dance, as others have said - you just have to learn to live with it and try your best to minimize the effects of it. Back when I used to build profile backlinks(haven't done so for a few months now), I'd sometimes make the mistake of building 30-50 in a day, then the next day building none. Google likes consistency, so you're better off building 5 every day for a week, rather than 35 in one day. No matter what you do though, the Google dance is inevitable. With one of my sites, it dance for 3 weeks in November, but didn't dance between then and mid February.

Keep things as consistent as you can, and make sure to get your backlinks from lots of varied sources

Its common. It would rank high initially (freshness factor), then fall off (fresh no more but not eonugh links) and then stabilize (enough links).

The same applies for your links, but at a second order. Say you have an old(ish) site. You set a bunch of fresh links. What happens? The linking pages are fresh, so they rank well, as a result the page that they are pointing to (your site page) gets ranked better. Now since you built the links in a shot and inconsistently, the linking pages age similarly. So practically all of them lose the freshness factor and the value of those links decrease. Hence your page goes down. Now your links are no longer fresh, but guess what - they get backlinks! Who makes these backlinks to your links? Lol - it depends on the nature of the linking pages. Just for example, ff you are posting on blogs, then in the next month the previous month archive appears on the home page of the original blog and you get links. And so on. So these links again increase in value and as a transitive result your original page gets a better rank.

      Did that help?

I have the same problem. I think google is every now and then showing results from their cache. Maybe from a couple of weeks ago. I jump from 41 to 14 to 41 and so on. 41 was my position a couple of weeks ago. Eventually it should stay at 14 and then hopefully go up from there and bounce from 14 to whatever and back and forth for a while.

It is quite common to all webmasters, this dance will happen whenever it finds new backlinks and again you will get original position and may also increase the rankings depends on the quality of the backlinks..always make sure to get the links naturally and also quality links...don't worry about this dance.

I've experienced both Google dance and Sandbox for most of my new sites and from experience it affects more for new sites less than 6 months old. After about 6 months most of my sites are more stable and I don't experience this as much as before.
