Now, this might make me seem like I'm new, but I'm not. I've got a completely different kind of business model for my company and SEO was never needed. I've decided to try out more SEO and to do a little more experimenting.

I'm not sure if SEO is even that complex. From what I can tell it's just quality backlinks, keyword-rich text on the page, good meta tags, and some bold/italic keywords on the page. What else would you say sums up SEO? It's appreciated in advance if you've got a link that gives a few tips

To sum up SEO for me

Get involved with your niche anyway you can think of. Create a network of blogs, forums, directories and other websites that you appear in.

    Quality Backlinks......Check
Keyword Rich Text...........No more than 2-3% keyword density
    Good Meta Tags...........Relevant Meta tags
    Bold/Italics............Means nothing.

Correct use of h1 and h2 tags and correct keyword placement in the title and the h1&2 tags as well as your meta description is very important

Those are the basics, as far as I'm concerned, but I'm not Google certified like some others here. I do have a few sites that are #1 on Google page 1 though......

    Peace

@krull I am in the same position as you. While I'm no SEO guru, I have made my own moves to get top listings and regularly now enjoy # 1 - # 10 positions within days or weeks for my keywords.

I use: Free SEO Report | MetaFever.com to check that I'm on track

Regular updates is a key factor I have noticed pushes my sites up the google results list, when I stop updating my sites, they drop in position, when I update, up they go.

    Cheers

Getting your keword in your domain name.

Your keyword in your page title. Close to the left as possible. There is a 65 character limit as far as Google goes.

Keyword in Page headline > Use H1 tags around the headline.

Use a meta description. This does not affect your ranking but does let you control your the text of your listing.

Search engine optimization is the art and science of publishing and marketing information that ranks well for valuable keywords in search engines like Google, Yahoo! Search, and Microsoft Live Search. Before you begin serious SEO you must ensure that your website is "search engine friendly". This means making sure that each individual page is compliant with search engine standards and ready to be indexed correctly. Follow each of the steps below for each page on your site.

    Hi Krull,

The basics of SEO are, as you suspected, quite simple. However, folks often get some basic concepts confused or fail to recognize the nuances that make a big difference.

I find it useful to think of SEO a bit like learning a martial art. Once you have learned the basics, and can demonstrate that knowledge, you have moved from a candidate student (white belt) to a beginner student (yellow belt). You are still far away from mastering the basics, or using your knowledge of those basics to learn intermediate or advanced strategies and tactics.

And just as in martial arts, more people quit learning after reaching beginner student status then continue on to more advanced knowledge. Even so, you are well ahead of the masses if you have only learned the basics. Don't think for one minute that is all you need to compete for highly competitive keywords. If you don't adequately learn the nuances, and how to employ the basics in advanced strategies, you will have a great struggle ahead if you want to go for serious keywords.

Just like any other marketing, it's not just about doing the basics, it's about how well you do them. And also like any other marketing it's about reaching a level of effectiveness that gives you a favorable ROI.

Good keyword research. It's no good trying to rank for a word such as 'amazon' you stand no chance.

Find good keywords for your niche, lots of them, create a content page around each one and optimise it around the keyword.

Include your chosen keyword for that page in any 'ALT' tags you have for photos.
