Best free SEO wp theme?

there are a LOT of seo friendly themes and i dont think there is a best.

just look for one that has uses a text title, shows tagline, displays catatories/tags at the foot of posts, etc... and are not jampacked full useless flashy stuff or use images in place of where text should be. many themes in this catagory

if you find one you like, then run it through here
The W3C Markup Validation Service

and make sure everything checks out and you should be good to go

also you can go in to WP > appearance > themes > install new

and just search "SEO" for starers

I'd suggest pairing a theme with the All in One SEO Plugin. It makes it easier to add meta data, and does a few other things.

  There are lots of great free SEO wp themes available just by doing a search for 'seo wordpress themes' on Google. Courtney Tuttle (my post count isn't high enough to post the link) has some particularly good ones that can cover just about any niche.

I like to use Blue sense. It is an adsense theme for use with word press. Last time I check it was CC free for use. You get all the PHP source. This means making changes is easy.

I use Headway paired with Platinum SEO, Thesis is also a great Theme but i prefer the easy interface Headway offers.

Check out this site. They grade themes (both free and premium) on different criteria including seo score.

I believe he was sensationalizing it. However, while you may not get traffic immediately, you get the power to customize your site so that you can start ranking higher.

For example, when you blog, a lot of top-tier affiliate marketers suggest adding custom content above your category pages. Before Thesis, this required creating an individual category.php for each category. However, with Thesis, you can fire up your category options, and add all the content you want through a easy-to-use interface.
