How important is Google PageRank?

Should be used to glance at how powerful a certain page or domain is in Googles eyes.

A lot of the time Google doesn't shoe the "true" page rank, so I wouldn't obsess over it

It tells you if you are indexed and Google values your content. That's it.

PR is to webpages what a thermometer is to temperature.

  PR is important, but not in the ways expressed by many folks on this forum. Just because an opinion is popular it doesn't mean it accurately describes the role of PR in SEO.
  
  Your own page's PR plays an insignificant role in ranking your page in the SERP. It is important for crawl rate frequency and plays a significant role in duplicate content filtering. The most important role of PR in SEO is that it is used to weight the influence of relevance on outbound links.
  
  The important thing to understand is that PR weights the power of your outbound links, it doesn't seem to influence your own page's ranking except at the margins that I described above. In other words, the PR of the pages that link to yours is the important influence on relevance, not your own pages PR. Google ranks your page based on relevance, not PR.
  
  Your own pages do not need any PR to rank well, they simply need high PR pages linking to them. Of course those high PR pages linking in will tend to increase your own pages PR, which is likely why so many folks confuse the effect for the cause. A close examination will reveal that you may have high PR and not rank well for an on-page keyword when you have no relevant inbound links for that target keyword.
  
  The bottom line is that your page PR has little influence on ranking until you have channeled that influence through an outbound relevant link.

I have a 1 page site created less than 2 weeks ago, 6 PR0 backlinks to it and a couple of days ago it was given a PR3. Others are reporting similar. Google was generous over Easter to all the new sites.

  Here's my opinion:
  
  Take a forum with thousands of pages. You are not really optimizing for one or two keyphrases. What is more important here is the overall page rank, which would push a large number of pages to the top of SERP. So if you get tons of links, even from non-targeted anchor texts, PR would rescue you.

IMO relevant backlinks are more important. I have had high PR sites in the past with no increase in quality traffic. Relevant backlinks sent more quality traffic.

I don't think PR is that much important. Focusing on Search Engine rankings and getting high quality backlinks is more important. However if your website has some good high PR backlinks, it will naturally get some PR depending upon your backlinks.

Pagerank doesn't mean anything, obviously it's nice to have a higher pagerank website, but there isn't any need to fuss over the pagerank, if you just rank for some good keywords and carry on link building, sooner or later your going to have a pagerank bump and you'll be PR1/PR2 and so on. It's something you don't need to worry about, that'll come in it's own time and really, doesn't mean anything.

Why Google PR is important to a Website?

Don't think for a moment Google's PR is not important! In some occasion it might not play much weight, but for a website - PR is extremely important!

Let me explain a bit here...

PR is important because it indicate how much link juice and trust a site has.

This raise another question -

Why didn't I see any increase of traffic when my PR went up?

The answer is simple, you didn't add enough keyword targeted content! Usually, when your ranking is up, you also need keyword targeted content to help you drive traffic.

Don't forget that site's structure is also very important -

If you organize your site with proper category and navigation, you actually help Google to profile your site better!

The link juice will flow from your homepage to all keyword targeted content pages, with proper structure, you can easily rank for all kinds of long tail keywords - even without backlinks!

Will a site with low PR still rank higher than my targeted keyword?

Yeah, why not? To rank for a keyword is different than more traffic to your site, that's a different kind of questions.

If you want to rank high for a particular keyword and compete with other site, you need backlinks! High PR site tends to require less backlinks to rank than a Lower PR site, do you see the Power of PR now?

A site without a plan is useless, no matter how many backlinks you send to it, you won't see much traffic increases...

Well firstly recent PageRank update is completed as far as i know. And for Pagerank Ya i take it as a Plus for my domain. But you should work on your SERPs, like how good you are ranked on google for different keywords.

Pr isn't that important but it gives you a good idea where your website stands, you will probably have more of a chance of getting ranked in Google with a higher pr but you can have high serps even with a low pr if your website has good seo.

PR is an indication for the quality of back links and number of back links you site has. It lets Google know how much of an authority your website is, and boosts your rankings at the engines.

Its not too important however, becoz if you get the back links, you will get the increased rankings and traffic anyway, and traffic is what you want!

We shouldn't be too obsessed with page rank. Getting to top search engine is more important and Google's page rank impacts only about 20 of it's calculation on search engine ranking. So it really does not mean that much.

Many friends tell me that it is really unnecessary to pay much attention to Google PageRank. Yes, with the development of Google ranking algorithm, Google PR is becoming useless gradually.
But for people who are not familiar with search engines, SEO and online marketing, you can still regard PR as an important of factor of SERP.
