Starting PPC for the first time!

Hey guys,

I just got a 100$ voucher in the mail for adwords.

It supposedly expired last month, but google didn't seem to mind when I entered my code in.

Right now I am waiting for them to send the money to my bank account, so that I can verify my account.

My IM coach thought it was about time for me to get into PPC with this voucher.

From what I can tell, PPC is simple, you use long tail keywords, set up campaigns and see which keywords convert.

The ones that convert you keep, the ones that don't, you drop.

Then you take the ones that work and you split test the ads and put more money into them.

I am a logically minded mathematical person. So I think PPC is a good way for me to grow my business, I have my own product that I sell.

Just wondering, am I missing anything? Any advise out there? My coach is great, but getting more opinions is always welcome.

    As you have your own product are you capturing emails?
    do your keyword research
    use the content network as well
    do your demographics
    be sure to set up specfic ad groups use 1 keyword per ad group
    use the adwords editor to do a large volume of ads
    know who your competition is use keyword spy or similiar
    track your conversions
    know what you can pay for a lead or sale
    figure a 1% conversion

    Alright awesome, I already know I have a good conversion rate with my landing page, because of free traffic I sent.

    The niche I am in is a one time buyer niche. None of my competitors use an opt in, I couldn't figure out how to work one in either. I do have an aweber account from other niches though.

    One campaign per keyword? Can I know the logic behind it? I don't recall my coach saying anything about that.

    An IM coach is someone successful in IM who coaches you to success.

    I paid mine a few hundred dollars, every day he checks up on me on skype, it's great to have someone to help me out when I am stuck.

    He means one keyword per group. You wouldn't get too far with a campaign with just one group and one keyword. There's a 25 campaign limit per account.

    The logic is that you'd create an ad specific for that keyword which in theory gives you a perfect QS score. However, there's more to QS than just having your keyword in the ad. See Adwords FAQ.

    Also, there is not much difference between the keywords "skin for sony w205 phone" and "sony w205 phone skin". The words are just in a different order and no need to put them in different groups all by themselves. I'd even add "skin for sony w205 cell phone" or "mobile phone". They are all relevant (assuming I sell those things and land on the proper page) and I wouldn't remove any of them.

    Youre close, but let me clear something up for you.

    Long-tail keywords will get almost no traffic - You will need thousands of them to get any kind of scale. When picking keywords, think about the intent behind the search. You can hit very high volume keywords that convert extremely well.

    Would you rather have a 10% ROI with tons of volume?
    ...or have thousands of keywords with low traffic? <----management nightmare. Stuff will start slipping through the cracks.

    Oh... and Prosper202 is free so you better be using that

    That makes sense for keywords, so what I want to do is target buying keywords. (I did a lot of successful bum marketing so I think I know what this means)

    So don't go for low traffic, but don't worry about high traffic, worry more about the keyword itself.
