Confused about traffic stats

When looking at the traffic stats using awstats, it will typically tell me i have something like 50 visitors on a given day, but when i check awstats it shows that only about 5 came from search engines. Does that mean the other 45 visitors were just bots and spiders? For practical purposes should I just go by the number of search engine visitors? Thank you.

You listed awstats twice. Did you mean something else? I've noticed Google Analytics shows much less traffic for my sites....yet awstats seems to say that bots are counted separately - but show way more traffic. I guess I need the same kind of answer as you!

I think awstats is more up to date, it will tell you the stats up to the minute. I think with analytics it takes longer for the details register, and I don't think analytics is as accurate.

At the top of awstats, has the unique visitors for the month. Its a shame they don't do it for the day or subtract visitors from previous days of the month. If someone came to the site last week and returned today, they'd be classified as a unique.

The difference between search engine traffic and others could be that people are coming to your site directly. They may have come previously and are using the history to return. Also traffic could come from places where you have backlinks such as forums, blogs or social bookmarks.

Personally I try to keep my visits minimal so it does not don't interfere with the stats from real traffic. I think this may be a contributory factor to 45 / 5 visit count.

And bot traffic is not included.

I use Google Analytics. Someone correct me if I'm wrong - but I don't think that bots are counted since they can't utilize the JS code by GA.

Google analystics is 24ish' hours outdated, that may be why your seeing mixed results, but no you shouldn't judge your daily traffic on SE traffic, unless you only get traffic from SE, but I don't think I have a singel website with 100% SE traffic.

I'm pretty sure Awstats does include bots..

I like using Google Analytics but neither will be 100% accurate. Just use it as a guide.

Yeah it does include the bots and other software searches like directory submitters and keyword tools, and also the file downloads like images. If you scroll to the bottom of the page you'll see the keyword searches that were done. It's more accurate, but could also be from one of the keyword tools and not a human searcher, but it's a lot more accurate.

Do robots add to the 'unique visitor' count?

Thanks guys. I may give google analytics a try. I did a search for it and some people didn't like using it because of the big brother effect. It's just frustrating because I want to be able to see exactly how many people visit my site that are really actual people and potential customers.
