Hello all! I'll start with the main questions and then ramble on as I usually do.

1. Can Ping.fm be used as benefit to SEO?
2. What is the best way to utilize Ping.fm?
3. I've heard of backlinking backlinks for extra oomph. Can I post a link to a backlink on Ping.fm to achieve this? (Is this what Backlink Booster does?)
4. More questions to come soon

Now the ramble.

Believe it or not, I just signed up to about 25 Social Networking sites for the use of optimizing my new blog for traffic and search engines. A long shot, I decided to give it a try. The sign up process took over two hours, but I finally finished them all and liked them to my Ping.fm account. I made my first test post, and sure enough it worked very well. My post was distributed to each Social Network.

URL Shortener
I was worried that Ping.fm's URL shortener would effect SEO. Some research indicates that it's a 301 redirect therefore it doesn't effect PR juice too much.

DoFollow Links
I have yet to test every link in every Social Network, but my guess is that perhaps a good 15% of them will be DoFollow. This will help exponentially as the months of posting accrue.

Quick indexing
The presence of extra links out there will help Google's decision to index my blog posts, dofollow or not.

Social Networking
Not now, but in the future I hope to slowly expand my presence on these networks and incorporate other sites of similar niche. Use the same Ping.fm account. Darnit I don't wanna spend another 2 hours signing up accounts again!

Weeding out the cream of the crap
I'll learn what social networks work, and what ones don't. This information will help further sign-up processes. I also hope to be able to educate others on the optimal, efficent use of ping.fm for traffic and SEO.

All this work has been done and boils down to ...

Backlink Index Express - look for the wso. [ not mine ]

focus on the integrated blogs and the only current meaningful Social Bookmarking sites from a google index assisting standpoint is jumptags.

    good luck!

So far ... it seems all the micro-blogging sites like Jaiku, Plurk, Twitter are nofollow. Posting URL-shortened nofollow URLs there appear to have no difference.

However, Blogging sites like Blogger, Wordpress, Tumblr all have excellent page ranks and are dofollow! I am only a third through my list thus far. So far I think I know where this is gong.

I have another question: there is a url that goes something like:

    socialnetwork.com/link.jsp?url=mywebsite.com

    Is this counted toward Backlink?

I am such a goof! I did not realize that Ping.fm allowed you to remove their automated URL shortening! This will help exponentially.

About done with the list. 10 out of the ~30 Social Networking sites allow for DoFollow linking!

      Conclusion

Ping.fm is supremely helpful in generating unique, targeted backlinks over time, but there will need to be additional backlinking via other sources in order for it to be supremely effective in Google SERPs.

I've noticed if you remove pings url shortener as default then then your url will be shortened on the site it posts on.. For example on identi, your url will be shortened to http://ur1.ca/*** . Surely if ping uses a 301 perm redirect isn't it best to just go with that instead of having to individually check all the sites you are posting to?

        Opinions warmly welcomed!

I usually alternate ping.fm, Friendfeed, Amplify, and Posterous.

All work well. The only problem I found was Tumblr killed my account. They never would answer why, but I suspect it was too many cross-bookmarked summaries and links.
