not a lot, but a little, but that goes hand in hand how regular content is added to the site and how unique the content is.

Google enjoyes aged domains. But if you recieve a lot of web recognition for your site (links) then it acts in the same way.

As others have mentioned above, an aged domain can help, but it's just one factor you need to consider.

If you can get your main keyword as your domain name, this will also help you - but again it's not essential.

You should treat SEO as a long term strategy.

So long as you build consistent backlinks, add regular content, and all the other things you've been told, then after time your site will be trusted more and more by Google and you'll be rewarded with higher rankings.

The key (in my opinion) with Google is to play by the rules and give them what they want. It may be possible to game the system in the short term, but in the long run sites with unique, relevant content and good, relevant backlinks are always going to rank best.

Agree domain age does count - the older the better; buy a domain name for 10 yrs - shows your intention.

Keywords in the domain name - definitely works; try to get .com, net, org or country tlds. Avoid hyphens in the domain name.

That's very true. The longer you buy it for the better - it does show intention.

Likewise, an older domain name carries more trust and credence than something that has just been put online.

      It's a sign of a site to stay over a "fly-by-night" site.

Generally, the domain should be at least 3-6 months old, or it'll definiately run into the google sandbox effect.

It use to count for about 20% of your SEO score, but lately content and backlinks have dominated and knocking down the total affect of age and domain name

just my observations with the testing I have done

Sure content, content, content plus ideally one-way backlinks that use the appropriate anchor text and are from on theme sites.

Age of domain is a factor, but not the only one in terms of link building. Other items to guage: alexa rankings (the lower the better), pagerank (download google toolbar to guage this) (the higher the better), and types of backlinks to the site you are linking from (the more .edu, .gov, and other trusted links the better) For all practical purposes, the yahoo directory is an excellent example of a very powerful link that is better than 100 or even 1000 lower quality links. Yahoo directory was established in 1995, has an alexa ranking of 1, the best you can get, and a google pagerank of 8, just about the best you can get. Also they have thousands of edu and gov backlinks. Every time I submit a site to this directory I see a substantial increase in rankings within about 2 weeks.

    Hope that helps!

Be aware, however, that many people believe buying a domain for its age is not an effective SEO strategy. If the content of a page changes completely, Google may change its assumptions about the authority and trustworthiness of the page.
