How much does writing quality matter?

I've never had a negative comment but I do spend time to make sure my writing is legible and free of typos and grammatical errors.

I used to be an editor so "bad writing" jumps off the page at me and drives me nuts. I think attention to detail is a courtesy and if people don't take that care then what level of attention have they put into their product or service?

I think it's very important. Even from an SEO perspective. I'm in agreement with many people in the idea that Google definitely pays attention to bounce rate and avg. time on site. With poorly written content, you're more likely to have high bounce rates and low avg. time on site.

I always spend a lot of time writing...that's why I HATE it. For me to write an:
interesting, relevant, selling, and engaging piece of content can take 3 or 4 hours. I absolutely hate it and I've started to outsource most of my writing to textbroker. But even then, I won't use anyone below a quality score of 4...so articles are expensive there. Usually around 10$ but I always like the quality of the content.

To answer you question, I think writing quality is very very important. Maybe more so depending on your niche. I know for a fact that you can't try to sell to any type of salesperson without some really high quality stuff. Like me, I'm a hard sell on most things that I buy online...and I know for sure that I wouldn't be buying from a website with poor content and improper grammar.

  While it's helpful to be as error-free as possible, when writing anything it is far more important that you engage the reader. As long as you provide useful content or entertaining content (both is even better), most readers will not be picking apart your writing to see how many mistakes you might have made.

  I don't know anything about your writing style, but because we are dealing with humans and the internet, there is a good chance you will find a critic, or more accurately, they will find you. If you feel you received good advice and the criticism was constructive rather than combative, work on the areas mentioned. If the criticism gave you nothing to work with and seemed to be more of an attack than ignore it and move on.

  Yeah,
  once i wrote a quick post because i was busy that day but still wanted something for my readers to read.
  Bad idea i should have told them i was busy, instead i get about 10 comments telling me how bad i am at spelling.

IMHO,

For SERP ranking matters, writing quality matters somewhere between slim and none and slim left the building.

For Sales purposes, sure it matters.

For SEO, you'll want to ensure you have quality content and that would include no grammar and spelling errors. You want visitors to find your site, but you'll also want them to return. Having quality content that is superior will help determine customers will want to return.

Hi There

No one has ever criticized me for bad writing, but they have thanked me time and again for my going out of the way to deliver great quality and putting the "customer first." That technique (visitor/customer first) instills trust and makes people like you.

I think quality to the point of never writing a page is counter productive. But creating content that caters to the crowd is something I can never do enough of.
