I have been wondering for a while now how do people monetorize twitter and is it something that really does help with SEO?

It has nothing to do with SEO.

Your tweets may show up in search results on google, but
    does nothing for the links.

If you send out many spammy links in tweets, you will not
get anywhere, and may get your account canceled.

Get as many followers in your niche as possible. Send out
tweets that are interesting and don't spam. That's the value.

There is this huge myth going around that tweeting links is
a way to riches. It's not. All it will give you is a bunch of irate
followers who will unfollow you quick.

You are absolutely spot on. There are really tons of spammy links on non-related stuff on Twitter that really turns people off.

Twitter links show up in real time results. They also occasionally get scraped - so it's worth it quite often.

Not so much if you are trying to build up followers - but most spammers aren't real concerned with follower retention rates.

  • Twitter is a great platform for building and growing your target audience. As long as you have a good plan for building good relationships and adding value to your followers and execute on it consistently, you will notice a steady increase in traffic to your websites. As many have said here before, make sure not to spam them with offers directly on Twitter - it's not a sales platform. Once you have highly targeted traffic coming into your sites, you can monetize either directly on your site or by building a list.

You can tweet something promotional for your site but there must be a limit. At the same time you also need to post something interesting and informative so that your followers can find your tweets interesting, not only promotional. You need to post such a way that seems valuable for other followers. Remember if you repeatedly post spammy things then you'll just get ignored by your followers.
