Blog Commenting - Worth it?

They can be useful if they're used right. You may see some temporary benefits from mass, automated stuff... but your best bet is to find blogs that relate to your niche. If they have good traffic or page rank, even the better (depending on your goals). Relevancy and traffic means good chance of targeted traffic. High PR means link juice if it's DoFollow.

Spamming does no good if it's taken right down! Use common sense. Look for a few each day to go leave comments on and be real. Interact and add value when you can. You can pay someone, but find out if their work is manual or automated.

I have some wordpress sites myself, and the spam comments drive me nuts and I delete all of them - and I can't understand why people approve them - obviously they have no spam filters.

I think commenting on blogs manually sounds like the only decent option here.

What is the easiest way to find blogs in your niche that allow sig's? Is it simply manually searching google or is there something to type into the google search box to speed this process up?

Blog commenting helped my blog get started when it was new and I think it really works. I never paid anyone to do it though and also never got a spamming bot but did all the stuff myself.

I think blog commenting is very important. Yes, people do practise it because they want to build backlinks but I do agree with Danny...

You should add value to someone's blog rather than just throwing a "one liner" post with a link out there.

I attend to bookmark a blog when I find it very useful and return on a regular basis to read more posts. Ideally for me, is to leave comments on 10 blogs a day.

Takes roughly around an hour to do but it is worth it. I like the idea to get to know the other Marketer and build up a relationship with them.

I comment on blogs if I learn something from the post or if I can add value to the discussion. I don't do it for backlinks. That said it is a good way of bringing visitors to your site if they liked what you had to say and want to learn more about you.

Blog commenting is probably one of the easiest ways to build backlinks and and not only that its so quick and easy to do!!

I dont use software and I can easily do 20 or 30 comments in an hour and these are not one liners

I have found that blog commenting is more powerful than many other methods I have been in this game a long time now and its more productive than producing a billion crap articles and submitting.

I can outsource it but I actually enjoy spending a few minutes a day reading a few blogs

Dont spam and leave a comment that YOU would accept on your own blog dont leave comments with names like

If you cant get your keyword in use your actual name or pen name

no follow do follow arguement..... I dont think its a massive problem yes do follow appear to have more weight but no follow IS NOT ignored.

I dont think its time consuming at all you can easily do 10 comments in a 20 mins I normally spend 30 days building backlinks to one of my sites then spend the next 30 days on another and work through like that

It works quite nicely but you have to play nice with the blog owners. Join their article discussion. Add value with your comment by either asking a follow-up question to them or an additional resource that connects to their article. In other words, treat them the way you'd want other people to treat your blog with their comments.

Ok, maybe I am biased but I do use blog commenting. I do it manually on high pr or high traffic sites (from lists that I have gathered) and with software to do great amounts in short time. What's nice is that google and other search engines finds the links over time so it looks natural. Just make sure your urls where you post your comment and links to are indexed and preferably with Page Rank and you will see great results over time. Stear away from Wordpress though... too hard to find places to comment without moderation. If you do it manaully that is...

But to answer your question: if done right - sure it works.

If you have enough time, then blog commenting is a good choice to attract targeted traffic. However, blog commenting is useless to SEO strategy and backlinks building because most blogs are using "NoFollow" tag in order to avoid the spams.

Blog commenting 101 - the fastest way to get more traffic and higher rankings

This is one of those threads that will end up leaving a 'newbie' dazed and bewildered!

There are so many differing opinions, some extremely naïve, others just plain wrong.

Here I am going to try to address most if not all of the aspects of blog commenting, forgive me if I miss a point or two out!

I am writing this because I know a lot about driving free traffic although I spend less time doing it these days, I would much rather pay for traffic and buy myself the time back.

However I still do manual blog commenting, about 30 minutes a day and it still is the fastest way I know of generating thousands of back links and targeted traffic in a short space of time without resorting to spam or any other blackhat methods.

For this method you need to find yourself 10 to 15 relevant, high pr blogs with the 'Top Commentor' wordpress plugin installed.

It might take you a day or so to find these blogs but it is time well spent.

This plugin will appear on every page of the blog so for example if I have found a blog with a pr5 and 2,000 pages and I made enough comments to make it on to the top commentators list (usually shows the top ten) then I would get a pr5 back link and then links with pr juice from all the pages within that blog. So if you times that by ten blogs, that is 20,000 links from 10 different IP's, plus to avoid your comments getting deleted you will have written helpful, informative posts, then you will also gain a ton of traffic from (real) people clicking through to your site.

I also mix into this a least two highly targeted very high pr blogs with the nofollow attribute, Google still counts them as back links, they just don't pass on the pr, but Yahoo and Bing (who can both send a lot of traffic) do count them. It also makes your linking look more natural.

As has been mentioned many times, add value, if you do that your comments will always get approved. Another benefit of adding value is that some of the 'blogmasters' will ask you for guest articles which is another great way to gain more exposure.

A quick note to any bloggers: Add the 'top commentor' plugin it helps enormously to add good quality content to your site, it also gives you instant feedback on what your readers would like to see or know more about. Be strict on deleting comments that are spam or not adding value to your blog.

So is it worth it, IMHO YES.

(What's the betting that someone with around 10 posts has this out as a 'WSO' within a week )

A couple more points (I just knew I would forget something)

Try to find blogs without hundreds of comments, the least the better, gets you on the 'list' quicker and the pr juice is not diluted as much.

Try to be one of the first to comment then you have more of a chance that a 'real' person will read your comments.

I think it's worth it but you have to do it the right way. You can't just spam every blog with the same comment & expect to see good results LOL

Provided that you're commenting on relevant blogs then surely, your comment will be counted and decent amount of traffic goes your way. Also, it would always credit on how you add value to the posts you're commenting on and not only by leaving a compliment. That way, you'll not taken as spam.

I set up Google Alerts to blogs with new artcles to certain keywords, this way I can read all the new articles coming out and comment... only talkes me 10-15 minutes a day.

I do comment by myself when I stumble upon a high pagerank blog which is related to my sites subject.

I try to avoid multiple replies spread on thousand of pointless blogs...

It has lost a lot of its steam for many reasons.

I still do it, but the outcome, finding good PR *pages* with Dofollow possible is NOT worth the time/hassle..even with software like scrapebox.

I never see more than 3 or so PR5 blogs, and i still need to do it manually (because i want them to stick) - takes a LOT of time.

I think there are way better solutions for link building, eg. article distribution via blog networks. Better than spending hours a day for 5 or so "good" comment links.

(Needless to say that he majority of them running Wordpress is Nofollow anyway)

Blog commenting can be very powerful. If you do your homework and find the largest (traffic worthy) blogs in your niche and then carefully pick and choose well thought answers to problems and comment intelligently, you can be looked upon as an expert in that field and you will be noticed. I have found that posting useful or helpful comments more than makes up for the little effort that I expend posting comments. I have also noticed that I get a steady stream of traffic from my posted comments. So I would definitely say it is worth it for me.

You shouldn't use blog commenting to get backlinks, you should use it to build relationships and establish your authority. Commenting on other's blogs can help you establish yourself inside your niche.

I have one niche where almost ALL of my backlinks come from daily commenting on one blog and that has worked VERY well for me. I do not spam it of course but do try to provide on target and well thought out, relevant comments.

Adding something worthwhile to the discussion tends to work. However, simply piggy backing off of someone else's post, and just putting a link or random garbage has a tendency of causing annoyance and being counter productive.

I used to hire a freelancer to do that stuff for me and found it to be cheaper than BUYING textlinks. But the links never really stayed for long so I was forced to my original plan of buying these links.

But the strategy definitely works, if you can build the right team!

Blog commenting is getting harder and harder because of all the spam. Blogengine is a good blogging platform to leave comments on as they stick better than on wordpress blogs.

Use blog commenting to actually participate in your market. Don't be an seo monkey and just comment for link juice. Bring value to the table and you will be rewarded. The sign is already on the door. Old school one dimensional seo is getting less effective every few months.

It dependes. There are some who are spammers and just post whatever just to put a link and have something to comment on. If you'll outsource blog commenting, better make sure that whoever you hire has knowledge on the job rather than posting, 'that's great' or 'good job'. Put more sense into it and really try to contribute.

I have no idea whether or not any of the blog spammers think it's successful. It's not on my blogs ... I delete and blacklist them all.

Blog commenting is worth it, if and ONLY if you make relevant post that benefit the rest of the blog.

If you post something simple just to post a backlink, your comment is regarded as spam and nobody will even take the time to look at it. I've had traffic from other forums where I leave relevant and thoughtful posts.

Well I receive so many spam blog comments to my own blogs, that I am genuinely interested to find out how much businesses are actually paying these blog commenters- because it is so crap!

Anyway, I think blog commenting is okay if you can add something of substance to that blog. If it was your site or blog you would want people to read your posts and comment if they find something of use or like something right? So why do blog commenting if you are not prepared to offer someone else the same curtesy?

I would never comment on a blog that I haven't at least read one or two posts and find something I could comment or talk about.

Sure you are marketing your site, but people forget they need to add value. Most people's comments get deleted faster than they imagine simply because they did not take the time to read anything and provide a thought-provoking comment.

Blog commenting is a lot of work with little reward. Your time can be spent so much better on other things. People that resort to blog commenting are people that do not know how to properly promote a website.

I comment on blogs about 3-5 times per day. I am in the commodities trading niche and market my offline brokerage services via seo and driving traffic to my page.

Being in the trading niche, there is always tons to talk about via blog comments. I comment on peoples blogs and they come to mine to comment.

You have to make sure that you are adding value to the current article or discussion, not spamming. I always get the..

"The article is goodz. I think maybe. Have U tried Cialus in the year 2014?"

This just screams that the person is using some sub-par bot to build links to their site, which is a waste of money because:

1. Nobody ever approves these comments on their blogs.

2. These links are next to useless and google does not like them.

You get much better link juice if you add some high quality, unique, and relevant content with your anchor text as a backlink. If you do this, most times the blog owner will approve your comment.

I have found that by blog commenting without any regards for the topic of the blog or attempting to add any comments of value to be a complete waste.

However, for the blogs where I was actually interested in the subject matter and posted quality comments which provided additional value to the subject being discussed on the blog proved to be extremely rewarrding for the blog owner, the other folks reading the blog contents and for me personally based on tha traffic generated to my site and the sales made.

Not saying I ever endorsed the blog spamming but due to recent testing I can now effectively vouch for the ineffectiveness I saw first hand by not adding value to a blog.

I would rather become a guest blogger or provide an article as a guest contributor any day over having 500 blog spam comments attributed back to me based on the ROI from the guest blogging.

The biggest problem with blog commenting for backlinks is that you have no idea if it will get approved or not. You could be leaving comments on blogs that are dead when it comes to approving them.

There's a lot of benefits from getting backlinks through comments but you're going to have a lot that never get approved. It's up to you if your time is worth it. Outsourcing is the key.

Everything helps. Blog commenting too, but I wouldn't depend on it

Here is another way I use, in fact one of my favorite ways for driving free traffic using blog commenting, I find that hardly anybody does it properly.

One well written relevant comment can bring you hundreds if not thousands of subscribers as well as having the added benefit of giving you a back link to your site (sometimes)

I am going to generalize a bit here because I don't want to give away my exact blogs but search in Google for the top blogs in your niche and make a list of the top ten.

Then subscribe to these blogs, when the owner posts you will usually get an email notifying you.

Get to the blog and leave a GREAT comment, try and be in the first 5 comments.

If you have left a comment that is really helpful/controversal/offering a different point of view then you will find a lot of people will click on your link to read more about you.

An example, if you are in the IM niche and Frank Kern does a blog post the majority of people will scroll down a little to look at the comments, the majority say something like 'love you Frank, everything you say is great' (adding no value) so you skim to the next one.

What if you had a post that said something like 'great info, thanks, I have just written something similar but while it agrees with most of what you have written there are some additions'.

How many people do you think are going to click through?

Doesn't matter if it's a nofollow your not after the link!

I would rather have a good percentage of Franks marketing efforts than 100% of my own. (I'm lazy)

There are guru's in every niche, why not leverage the power of their marketing!

According to me Blog commenting is worth because
1) Back link to your site
2) Direct traffic to your site
3) Exposure to your audience

I'm really cheesed off with all the blog commenters trying to spoil my HubPages with their stupid links to forex and fake handbag sites. I've already had one blogger blog ruined with comments spam.

Please when you're commenting consider the owner of the site you are commenting on.

blog commenting should be used for the purpose of sharing and helping others and not for building back links...All those links are no=follow anyways so they wont count in the SERPs. Build your reputation instead and stay far away from automated posts..it ruins the experience for everyone and you will soon be black listed from the forum..

dont spam the forums and blogs..it will just hurt your reputation and it will NOT help in gaining higher rankings..not sure how many times Warriors have been asking this question..the answer is a resounding NO!

Now if you participate actively as someone useful that is a different topic all together...

two words to OP: Natural backlinking

Keep it natural, like if a bunch of people love your site so much they would have it in their forum sig, comment posts, article body, etc. Remember at the end of the day, backlinking is a measure of how many "people" have talk about your site on various platforms using various anchor texts.

I don't do too much blog commenting just with the intent of getting a back link. Although, I do for clients with a free tool like Free Link Building Software | Comment Kahuna.

I'm going to lump blogs and forums into the same category here:

I've found that blogs and forums that actually have a good readership and are related to my topic can drive very consistent traffic to my website. It's really one of the most consistent things that I can do for traffic.

I think you'll get similar results if you post consistently. I suggest setting up a goal like posting smart responses on 5 blogs per day.

After 5 days of repeating this process check your analytics and see where the traffic is coming from. The blogs that provide good value per comment, continue commenting.

I get great value on my website by posting on this forum. In fact, I even get a 25% opt-in rate from traffic. It's pretty sweet.

The only downside is that once you stop posting/commenting, traffic stops so a continued and consistent effort is needed for the strategy to work.

Quality comments with right anchor text is worth doing. Personally I don't bother about nofollow or dofollow blogs. I concentrate on giving value and I care mightily about anchor text and target page URL.

Being a blog commenter will build traffic, I argue that most people go about a blog commenting strategy the wrong way and there is a higher leverage technique that most bloggers don't do, but even if you follow the basic advice and just get out there it'll surely return traffic.

-Find a good Blog or Forum!
-Don't go to blog/Forum if you think they're to spammy.
-Pick a with a high PR.
-Some forums/blogs are for every.
-Its effective in its little way.

i was wondering this same thing. from my research it seems that you need to find blogs that do followed links. doing a google search you can find lists of them. but even then, the links are be dispersed so widely, there's not much juice

As a personal development blogger, I started by commenting and adding valuable discussion material to the site. I believe in what I do, I think it feels very personal and goes beyond the other tricks that we all use. Connecting with power players seems easier and easier if you get a good comment in at the right time.
