I told my friend a real estate agent I could get his webpage in the top page of google for "My Town Real Estate" with my town being the city that he lives.

I also told him I could do it without access to his webpage. Basicallly I was thinking I could do this without the keyword in the domain i.e. www.johndoe.com/mytownrealestate. Is this even possble without having access to his webpage?

I wanted to try it for fun but I think it's a really bad strategy.

But then again if I can get him ranked for the keyword I think he will throw some business my way.

Can you guys help?

  • Ok, I think you have a real challenge ahead of you. For starters, keyword in the domain HELPS but it is NOT necessary. I am not an SEO expert but my husband does SEO and I know for sure that it can be done without the keyword in the URL.

Second, if his site has not been optimize with keywords and ALL the crucial techniques that pertain to on-page SEO your work will be up hill.

For Off page SEO you do not need access to his site, so with in that aspect you did not lie. But as I mentioned in the beginning, you have quite a difficult path ahead of you. I think you need to find out if the site has already been optimized. If so, then you can just concentrate on the off-page techniques, for which you do NOT need access to the site.

Depending how competitive the keyword phrase is ("yourtownrealestate") you may be able to do it by having a seperate website that links to his website...

Also, you may want to start off with a local PPC plan directing traffic to his site.

You didn't tell your friend HOW you were going to do this... just that you would get him on Google's first page.

And what about getting him on Google Local maps? All of these can put him on page one for his keyword phrase if you know what you're doing.

There's a dude on fiverrdotcom that says he can do it for $5.00 Type in SEO when you go to the site. (no affiliation with him.)

Sometimes the best way to learn is to jump right in and commit yourself -- just like you did. You'll force yourself in ways you might never have if you waited 'til you know everything.

I woudl like to try to figure it out for myself. I don't think his webpage has been optimized and I know he doesn't have access to it.

I have never tried google local maps, how does that work?\

Can you explain how having a separate website linking to his would work?

If you used some thing like "johndoe/mytownrealestate" and I am assuming that johndoe.com is not his domain and "foo.com" is
Well you might be able to improve the ranking for the your page at johndoe/mytownrealestate page / site but yo u told him you would improve "his" site foo.com

Well I would rather have access to the site but if you insist then you could increase his SERP by creating a serious of articles using "My Town Real Estate" as the keywords.
Also making sure that you anchor text would be "My Town Real Estate" but the link would be his site foo.com.

But if the content on foo.com does not contain the keywords "My Town Real Estate" then this is going to make this way more difficult.

What you could do is ask your friend to place up a page "My-TownReal-Estate.html" then build him a good page / article with your keywords in it.
Then build links to that page.

Regardless, if he is your friend at least do the later and if possible get a hold of the site and prep it properly. If his site is corporate controlled, which usually stink at SEO, then you mihgt not be able to change the site at all.
If none of these can be done then look for a domain that closely resembles "My Town Real Estate" and go from there, putting some great links to his site. In the ned you will get him traffic.
Add some good unique content on this and you will be in business.

Well, considering you could first crack the first page of Google with the keyword phrase you're shooting for, by having all the right real estate keywords, your town, and a decent optimized web page, once people went on your site, they would click the link to your friends website.

For example, I just did a quick website for my brother in Marietta, Georgia who has a hardwood refinishing and restoration biz there.

In less than two weeks, it's on the first page of google if you type in "Marietta hardwood flooring" ("hardwood flooring" being the keyword most searched for on Google in that niche) and I ain't even done with it yet. (mariettahardwoodflooringdotcom)

Now I'm working on google mapping him. It all depends how "dense" your keyword phrase is that you're aiming for.

I think for local searches like this the competition should not be too bad.

I couldnt personally do it instantly, but I'm pretty sure I could get it to rank within 1-2 months very well for a phrase like that - just through simple article marketing and building backlinks from simple sources like related blogs and forums - of course with the link text of "town real estate"..

.. of course this would be even easier if he had that phrase as the meta title for his website, a h1 or h2 tag, or at least on his page somewhere... which he should do if he really wants to rank for it - like if that is his main phrase he wants to be found for..

LOL. I would never make such a bold statement without even knowing the city we are talking about. Think its not to bad competition in

Miami, New YOrk, LA. I could go on and on? Real Estate can be VERY competitive in many cities.

Problem is, you are not doing it the right way.
Nobody in their right mind would do city real estate for
a bet like that. You would get soooooooo much competition from
other authority sites, you would be waging a losing battle.

But, if you do another approach, and think "google maps," you
        may have a shot.

But you would need to change the parameters and a key word.
        That is, agent.

        hometown real estate agent
would list real estate agents in that town with the map.

Submitting to google maps is free, just google it.
The competition is all about ratings and relevance, not
        backlinks.

Look into that, and if the town is not too big, you will
have a shot to at least get on the front page.

Do a search right now for yourtown real estate agents and
see what the competiton is like.

A friend of mine owns a jewelery store in which he has some hi-tech CAD/CAM manufacturing equipment that can custom make any piece of jewelery. I was at his home and we were looking at his store's website.

I did a google search on his name, and of course his site came up at the top of Google because it was his unique name. On the right hand side was an adsense ad by his largest competitor! My friend said, "How did he get there? He is everywhere when you Google me and any other local jewelers."

What my friend didn't understand was adwords/adsense, and he didn't realize his competitor could put the name of every local jeweler into his keyword selections in adwords when he set up a local PPC campaign.

Imagine a friend of yours owns a screw driver and a wrench. His chief mechanical claim to fame is he once took apart a toaster oven, then put it back together again, and it still worked!

Would you want him to work on your automobile? Even if he said there is no cost and he would like to give it a try?

    Hmmmmm!

It is impossible to say how difficult your task is without knowing the town name. Backlinks should do it but you say it hasn't worked yet. It could be that you need more, or that you need better quality links. But it could be that your strategy will give you some results after some time when Google finds your links. I would say it is almost certain that it can be done without access to the website. Look at examples, like when you type in "French Military Victories" to Google and hit "I'm feeling lucky". The content of the top site has absolutely no use and yet they consistently keep it at number one by the number of backlinks.

  • In the first place you shouldn't commit on doing something your are not sure you can provide. It won't hurt asking him now the web page, try to explain the mechanic is not that simple...anyway his your friend and he will understand you " I'm sorry" the truth will set you free

You can absolutely do it without access to the site. I have done this personally, so I know it is true.

It depends on the competition as to how fast you can make it happen.

Focus on backlinks, get high ranking PR sites and look at building link wheels. Use Google wonder wheel for help, it is free and will tell you exactly what Google would expect to be linking to your site.

For Some reason the thanks button is not working on this site for me now or would give evernyone a thanks as there is some solid advice in here and I sincerely appreciate everyone's response.

For the people telling me not to commit to something I'm not sure if I can do, I appreciate the message you are trying to beat into my head. But if I followed this philosophy I would not be involved in internet marketing. I have 100% full confidence in myself and my abilities and I know I can eventually perform. I tend to side with Time Ferris's philosophy (spead reading seiminars) create a market first, because I know I can figure it out and generate value.

Also, this is merely trash talking going on between two childhood best friends....

Hey man I need get my webpage in the top of google rankings, I called this internet marketing hot shot but he never called me back.

Me: Hey man I'm learning IM right now, I can take a shot at getting it ranked if you like me to, I'm still learning.

Him: Sure man give it a shot, if you can get us ranked there may business opportunity.

Me: man I would never charge you a dime for anything....ever

So this is just a personal competition to me, can i prove to myself and my buddy that I can do it? Yes, I think I can thanks to the wonderful advice on this forum

In case I can't do it. Maybe I'll recommend him a warrior.

    Thanks again everyone!!!

I committed to doing something I have no clue how to do as well. Raising kids. I'll figure it out though.

To save face you're going to have to get that page to rank. Dig in, there is plenty of info on this site.

Here's the shortcut way of doing it:

Buy loads of incoming links with TOWN REAL ESTATE in the anchor text, preferably from related sites on the same theme (i.e. real estate).

Get a few hundred of those and you will get ranked on the first page. Plain and simple.

Any questions just let me know

lol I get people buying our service that do this all the time.

For starters, I wouldn't worry about JUST getting his site ranked.

Get his Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIN or Squidoo lense pages ranked, and then work on a link building campaign for his main site.

As long as his phone's ringing and leads are coming in, it really doesn't matter what website is ranked, does it?

    Good Luck!

Too much competition for something like that to work.

You could, though optimize his site for specific condo developments or SFR housing tracks that might have a few hundred searches per month of incredibly targeted traffic.

We did that for a few folks with some success.
