Backlink Anchor Text For Local Keyword Phrase

If my site is focused on "widgets" in New York, my URL is "newyorkwidgets.com" and I want high serps for the keyword phrase "New York Widgets" when I'm backlinking, should my anchor text be "widgets" or "new york widgets"? I'm sure this is pretty basic, but most of the articles and posts I've read have been about broad keyword terms, so I just wanted to make sure.

Also, my site is about 49 pages, and I used an Automatic xml sitemap generator to create the sitemap. The generator included both mysite.com/ and mysite.com/index.php. I deleted mysite.com/index.php from the sitemap, because I prefer the search engines to show mysite.com/. I have two questions about this.
1) Should I leave mysite.com/index.php in the sitemap and use <rel href="canonical"> or does it not matter at all??
2) Should I use an automatically generated xml sitemap for the size of my site, or is there any advantage do doing a custom sitemap??

Thanks in advance. I've learned more from this forum in a few days than I ever have anywhere else.

    Yes, Anchor text should be: New York Widgets

    Removing mysite.com/index.php was a good decision.

    1. Remove mysite.com/index.php
    2. For 49 pages, automatically generated xml site map would work.

    Couple of things more:

    1. Make sure you 301 redirect mysite.com to www[dot]mysite.com, otherwise google will index both of these as separate links.
    2. Submit your xml sitemap to Google Webmaster tools.

      Thanks for the 301 redirect suggestion, I haven't done that yet. My "preferred url" in my webmaster tools is mysite.com, rather than www dot mysite.com. My site is already indexed as mysite.com, so is the 301 redirect still necessary?

        In this case 301 redirect is not required.

    Your backlinks should contain your desired keywords in the anchor text.

    Your anchor text should be "New York Widgets"

    Broader anchor text links add to your backlinks, but they won't necessarily have as much of a boost on your SERPS for your particular keyword.

    You should mix it to look natural.
    Remember all time when you do SEO you have to think that if somebody analyze it should look natural.

    So, I would use all these in anchor text,title,text:

    New York Widgets - 40%
    New York widgets
    New York widget
    new york widgets
    newyork widgets
    widgets
    widget
    New York
    NewYorkWidgets.com
    www.newyorkwidgets.com

    But also find more long tail keywords.
