A New SEO technique : Courtesy my competitors

While checking my competitor's sites that appear on Google, I found the use of a very interesting SEO method to write text in DIV using <b> <h1> and <h2> tags to enhance the appearance of keywords on the page.
The trick here lies in the hiding of the text by putting them in the <noscript></noscript>tags. I would post the url but am not aware of the rules in this forum , if it might be a breach of any? So I present the following as an example :

<noscript>

<h1>Fresh Fruit</h1> and <h2>Fresh Vegetables</h2>
Buy all your <b>Fresh Fruit</b> for a fraction of the price of major super markets. We are one of the most established <b>Fresh fruit and vegetables</b> firm In the world
</noscript>

The description might be funny but it was spontaneous. A test in the Dreamweaver revealed that the text was visible in the editor but vanished in the preview of the site. The question is whether this is a good SEO tip to use keywords in a content barren page, especially considering the prolonged success of my competitors on the top pages of the Google search list?
Your thoughts and opinions are welcome

Thank you

Hiding text is not allowed SEO method. Google hates it and website can be deindexed.
Google for "google hide text" to see explanation about this on Google Webmaster Central (Sorry I can't post live link to this article as I am new and post count is less than 15).

You are verging into black hat techniques. Google is smarter than you think. Even if you can get away with now it won't be long before it catches you so my advice is stay away from such tactics before you regret it.

Steer well clear of that method, it's black hat and will ultimately lead to your sites being wiped from google results.

Hidden text is not new. Scummy tactics like that have been around for years.

Why on earth you think that this is SEO is beyond me.

With this technique, you'll have higher chances that Google and other search engines penalize or worse ban your site. This technique belongs to black hat SEO. Other techniques include:

      door-way pages
      link farms
      keyword stuffing
      spamming

BLACK HAT, it will hurt you. Also, when you use no script it is also not good as it is used mainly for programming.

Disclaimer: I do not address this method.

Question: IF the website is ranking top 3 for over a year, thats a signal Google missed that technique.

If you can share the url in a PM, do so. Love to check the rankings along last months.

Guys, quit worrying about "on page optimization," just get great content, keep your title tags in order and do whatever makes sense for your users. Having keywords on the page, using <h1> headings etc. is helpful, but it won't boost your SEO.

This "technique" you are describing is ancient hat. It doesn't do anything. Google figure it out a long time ago and gives it no weight. It won't get you penalized, it just won't help.

Try this: report your competitor to Google and watch for their rankings to drop. They won't.

        True.

You'll find a lot of sites out there that use noscript or other related techniques to hide text and links. Sometimes it's intentional, sometimes it's just broken or old code and sometimes its done without the knowledge of the site owner. For example, some WordPress plugins use this technique to slip in a link back to the plugin developer's site or sites. Unless you view the plugin source, you'll probably never see it.

Ancient hat, pink hat or no hat, I love to see that URL and check *why* the top rankings. Google has some glitches and maybe this is another one. Who knows. Probably is just a good site. Probably not.

A reminder: You guys always check G .com BUT G .pt (and probably other local G's) have some really funny flaws every now and then, and I can tell you the portuguese version *moves* differently than the .com. The rules are not exactly the same.

Maybe they update later (months later) or maybe they use us as a (previous) test zone.

This is the million dollar question I can't answer, but been tracking data to try to solve the puzzle.

Anyways, OP, send me a PM to check that link.

search engine spiders can't really see hidden texts - that's what I read anyway. You'll only get penalties if someone goes to the search engines and reports you. Not sure if it's really the case.

I'm pretty new to SEO and IM - only started in 2007 and I know a lot of guys here have been doing it far longer than I have. But what I noticed is that people put too much emphasis on tricking the search engines to get to page one or #1 without thinking about why we're actually optimizing the sites for. At the end of the day, it's not about the search engines - it's the people who visit your site and how they will respond to your website. I know of some people who has his sites in the top 5 for several keywords but is not getting any business from it - I think it's probably because of his crappy looking site. So I'd have to agree with PhillipSEO (no we're not related lol) that the way to go is to create quality content that your visitors and customers (not just search engine) would want to read - which will help them decide to buy/opt in/tell a friend/sign up etc

The noscript tag is an alternative when JavaScript is disabled. So, it is not black-hat per se. You need to show something to your visitors if they have JavaScript disabled. So, as long as you don't place an excessive number of keyword phrases within those tags, you will be OK.

  • That method is a bad idea, and will hurt you many times more than it will help... I would never recommend it to anyone. And if your doing using a inline set of code your even more screwed....

When it comes to Google, page content is part of the equation, but keywords of your inbound links and the content of the pages they are on are much more so.

We've all seen examples where a page ranks for a term that doesn't have anything to do with the content of the page.

Nevertheless, for low competition long tial words, page content alone can be enough to rank you.

If you want to hide content, I recommend using layers. Very simple orivide you have a handle on basic CSS.

create a layer and fill it with your optimized content. Give it a z-index 0

Now create another layer and used background-color to fill it with white (or wahtever color your backgournd is) and put your real contentin there. Give it a z-index higher than 0.

    Viola - hidden content.

There you go. Nothing new about it. Just focus on content. Even if you have the best SEO in the world, if I google your kw's and wind up on your page, I am leaving as soon as I get there if the content isn't up to par. If you're doing PPC that's great, not ethical, but it will get you paid. You won't make it selling products or services like that.

  • You people have not even seen the site and the context in which the NOSCRIPT element was being used... only a made up, likely exagerated, facsimile... yet you scream blackhat without absolutely ANY proof. Get a grip...

The NOSCRIPT element is part of the HTML standard. It is part of the HTML standard for a reason. There are times when it is 100% whitehat to use it. You can't declare it blackhat without first knowing the context in which it was used.

As long as what is in the NOSCRIPT element accurately reflects the content that the preceeding SCRIPT element contains, it's perfectly legitmate.

This is useful when using things like JavaScript or Flash to implement visual elements and text on the page... Not everyone has JavaScript enabled or a Flash plugin installed... It's situations like this that it makes total sense to use NOSCRIPT to render an equivalent HTML text version of the visual element.

Thing is: no link to check rankings means we can't really tell IF it still works or not.

If the site uses that technique for some years and keeps top rankings for a *good* keyword... something is wrong.

Again my disclaimer: I do not address this method.

But I do love to check the site and archives to see how long he's doing it.

Just don't do it. You can rank other ways that won't put you in jeopardy of being knocked off the map and losing all of your work. This is one of the top ways people get de-indexed.
