1) Ignore each and any "competition", number of competing pages, nr. of sites with phrases in title and so forth...

2) Pull only the first #10 sites coming up in Google for your keyword

3) Examine the weakest one of those 10 sites.

If there is only one "weak " site in this list which you could outrank, then you have a good keyword.

Your thoughts? Would this work?

In this regard i would be interested to "find" a formula which gives a site a "strength" value.

Factors here:

DA (domain age), PR, Number of backlinks

With PR LIKELY the strongest factor, but DA also plays a not to be ignored role, and of course number of backlinks. Those factors can be taken to calculate a number for each site.

a) Average "competition strength" can be calculated for the first #10 Google sites by adding up all strength values divided by 10 - giving an overall idea how hard a keyword is to rank

b) weakest link value is given for the weakest site, possible likelihood to rank if only one weak site exists and is on this position for some time already

It is not a bad idea in itself! But I would use it only as an element of a strategy. And I would add: don't ignore anything! There's such a paucity of reliable data that every bit counts.

Major problem with realizing your idea consistently: there is no highly reliable backlink analysis tool, in spite of Yahoo and SEOmoz. A site you may find to be weak may turn out to be extremely strong and hard to beat.

Contradiction in your idea: given your assumptions, it's unnecessary to analyze all the 10 results, analyzing just the 10th result should suffice (not that I recommend this).

Another problem is that you should not pick your chief keyword just because you can get onto p. 1 for it. Pick one that will actually make you a profit.

Further, I don't recommend optimizing a site for just 1 keyword. In particular, optimize so that a large percentage of your traffic will come from the long tail.

All that said, analyzing your competition on p. 1 is indeed a great way to start working on an SEO compaign. But, well, we already knew that!

wow .. This good information .. indeed the number of searches and competitors must be considered also to see the strength that we want to defeat him ..

and in doing keyword research I always use market samurai, because with the software I can see in detail the strength of competitors terhadapa a keyword

Keyword research strategy is not about choosing the most frequently used keywords but to select the most popular keywords used by your target audience to find your product.
