Well if you just created one, everything takes time to have an effect.

Backlinks are always effective so it's certainly not hurting anything.

    I believe they're still effective.

From what I've read and experienced personally, they are not as effective as they used to be. Apparently google recognizes them for what they are.

Still not a waste of time but you may be better of using a different link building method.

This question has come up about 17,091 over the past 6 or so months (I have kept a close count).

You are really not going to find a definite reliable answer regarding this topic because everyone has a different opinion about it based off their own observations and results.

I would suggest you simply go the route of trying a strategy out on your own. Link wheels are fantastic because you can customize them in so many different ways; try playing around with a relatively simple pattern to begin with, and see where it leads.

I did this with 3 micro niche sites that I had that I wanted to move up a few rankings on the first page of the search results. I am not going to reveal the results till it has been a few months and my sites have settled to their "natural" ranking. But I will tell you I do not believe it has been a waste of time as of yet.

One thing I do recommend, however is to build a few smaller wheels in place of one larger wheel, and make sure each wheel is different in it's own aspect.

I have bought several link wheels from very complex to very basic. I see no magic from a link wheel. I see better results from direct backlinks.

I don't buy link wheels any longer. Not worth the money.

      Warriors,

I build link wheels using something different than your standard "A points to B, B points to C, C points to D, and D points back to A, with all of the link wheels pointing to the site."

Also when it comes to building backlinks, I am extremely paranoid to point backlinks directly to my website. That's where link wheels come in handy too because I point all backlinks to the each part of the link wheel, which then most of the link wheels point back to my website.

Link wheels take a little longer to rank than they use to, but I assure you that they still work...

Well that's not really a link wheel then. It's more like a bunch of web 2.0 sites randomly linking which is a great strategy. But when you use some formulaic approach like the one you described it's just so easily traceable.

If you're going to use web 2.0 sites for backlinks just link them all around randomly. It keep things looking natural.

I build some of them and it did not work for me. They might work for some people but not for me. I did some open links wheels too and it did not work neither.
    Just my experience.

This is always an interesting discussion. I've read and asked questions about link wheels and have yet to read any sort of explanation that gives factual information about why a linkwheel is effective. All accounts, including the "Lemonarian" site seem to be fluff and hype. People may very well have noticed better rankings or traffic after building one, but until they can explain with facts and evidence why the wheel produced those results I consider the results nothing more than anecdotal.

The backlink from a high-PR web 2.0 site makes sense, but the idea of connecting A to B, B to C, C to D and D back to A makes no sense whatsoever to me. How does that provide any type of SEO benefit?

I'd rather just connect them directly to my real page rather than set up a chain. Link juice is lost with each link in that chain. Better to get it from the source, I think.

It's been almost three months since I built my first link wheel with only 6 spokes. It has increased my rankings for the keywords it targeted but they are not too competitive. I jumped around 7-10 spots from second to first page. My spoke pages also have 4 spots on the first two pages.

Isn't this when people scream "omg why are all my sites de-indexed?!?!?!" You're not suppose to interlink your own sites

Interlinking your own sites, means YOUR own sites, not your web 2.0 properties

And as far as linkwheels go, from what I heard, you should never close the wheel, mix up the way the properties are linked, randomly link to other relevant sites like Wikipedia, or about.com, and social bookmark, ping, and RSS submit everything. Oh and it's best to do this all on sep IP's.

IMO it's best to outsource all of this, and save your self a crap load of time

It depends how you have created it. There are lot of buzz on if it is dead.. but No its not. I am still using it and making myself into no.1 page for many of the keywords

They still work but I constantly get better results without the
linking structure, yes quality trusted domains linking back to you
is a winner, and I know everybody disagrees but I just don't see
why the link patterns used by link wheel builders is natural.

In the good old days when people just put out content and
people liked it and linked back to it, that feels natural.

People didn't link to a site saying if you go there you can
find a link to another site, I've never seen why Google
would reward that, I just don't see the benefits many people
    say they do.

I have better results pushing trusted properties towards
a domain almost independently of each other , occasionally some
cross over, but nothing like to the degree I see link wheelers
    doing it.
