Advice - e-commerce website

I am looking at setting up a e-commerce website (my 3rd) and as I know sales do not start in most cases for a couple of months sometimes a lot longer.

With the above in mind I was thinking of making the website building the links getting it moving in the ranking (getting hits/buyers) then stocking the website with products that I would be selling.

The reason I would like to do it this way is the stock I will need to buy will be in the £1000+ and I do not want to have this outlay with no money back for such a long time.

Do you think this idea will work?

Yes, that's no problem at all. I have done this many times. Sometimes when I see that a specific page is getting traffic for buyer related searches, I add some products. You could even create an informational or spoof site and try to acquire links naturally from bloggers and authority sites, then just 301 it to the product pages on another site.
