Google: .com and Local Results

Hi.

I am in the UK, where most people access google.co.uk. But in terms of search results between .com and .co.uk there is a big difference. Why is this the case? And is it at all possible to get action from both?

On webmaster tools, I have had to select UK as the target market as the keywords are more relevant here then other places. Without selecting the UK, my rankings are not great for UK but ok for .com (which I am assume is going to be mostly USA).

    The former returns the results that Google deems most relevant to the US, the latter to the UK.

    Yes, get backlinks from .co.uk and UK-hosted sites to boost your rankings in Google.co.uk, and links from US-based sites to advance in Google.com.

    This setting reduces your ability to rank in Google.com
